Hi,

Does anyone know how to change the serial number in 720 machine?

Because we would like to test some S/W on V4R4 which need a p/w, but the
vender cannot generate the temp p/w for us.

Thanks,
Hei

Obviously, IBM keeps such knowlege tightly guarded. otherwise their entire
software protection scheme goes right out the window

You don't need to change your password on the 720 machine,

If you just install V4R4 you will have 60 days to "Test" it. And if you're
upgrading from see V4R3 you don't need a password at all.

I think they are refering to third party software. I do not recommend that
you attempt to change the s/n on your AS/400, it could mess up everything
*else* that uses it for a key!

Hello

I think your software provider MUST be able to generate a temporary
password. Imagine what could happen if you have to get in an emergency
recovery situation (like a big fire in your office for example) which
involves another machine than your current production one ?

System serial number comes out of the OS/400 code assigned to the
system. Each hardware and software upgrade will use this. If you do
manage to find the location and change it I think that a timer starts
waiting for a new systems password to be loaded and if none gets
entered before it times out you have a vegie system.

You can change the system name and LCLCPNAME without affecting the O/S
password.

Every vendor I have demo'd code from has always been able to give me a
test P/W to authorize their code.

As far as I know, the serial number cannot be changed. However, if you
order a new machine from IBM for a hardware upgrade, the new box keeps
the old serial number. This did simplify matters for us, only one
application needed a new password (because their security scheme checks
the model, which DID change, as well as the serial number).

I don't know what other options you may have, other than to plead your
case to a higher-up at the vendor.

Yes,
there is a system-value:

QSRLNBR *SYSCTL Serienummer van systeem

So the command CHGSYSVAL QSRLNBR changes the serialnumber.

At least not with CHGSYSVAL.
