I installed a IBM InfoPrint40 on our AS400, the printer has IPDS and using a
10/100 Ethernet card. I configured the printer with the IP address.

The printer was working great!

Now.... we have problems. It prints one line of garbage. IBM has been out
twice, replacing the SIMMS and ethernet card. Still printing garbage.

I just deleted the devd on the AS400 and recreated, same problem.

The only thing that has changed is our Network Admin. asked me to change the
printer to a new IP address he provided. I changed the printer config and the
devd on the AS400 for the new IP address.

Could it be the IP address? Any ideas what else it could be?

We had printed about 2000 pages on the printer, when it was working fine.

I'm not an expert on networking, but changing the IP address could mean having
the data traffic through different routers (because of gateways and subnet
masks). It might be possible that a router is adding information to the stream
of data being passed to the printer. The added information may be a bug in the
router (assuming such is the case). Before hardware is replaced, the printer
service technicians should be determining whether the data stream the printer is
receiving is VALID or not. Sounds like you need better educated printer service
technicians.

Well that sounds pretty interesting to me. I've got 2 InfoPrint 40's
w/IPDS attached via TCP/IP LAN to our 400 and have never seen a similar
problem.

Now, we know that simply changing the address of the device shouldn't be
a problem so that means either something more than that was changed, or
for some reason the IP address isn't vaild.

I would check the following:
1) If you have a printout from the printer and the 400 from before the
change compare it to one from after to make sure that only the IP address
as changed.

2) Check the joblogs of the printer jobs for errors. For an IPDS printer
there are always two jobs active a WTR job and a PDJ job.

3) Try changing the IP address back to the original value and/or a new
value.

4) Turn off the printer and ping the IP address from the 400. If you get
a response, the something else has the same IP address that you are
trying to use for the printer.

5) Do you have PSF/400 (5769ss1 option 17)installed and licensed on your
400? It is required for your configuration. (IPDS via LAN)

Hope this helps,
Charles Wilt
