I managed to find one of these in a closet. I proceeded to try to start it up, and as far as I can tell it did boot successfully, until it wanted to connect to a console, where it got stuck. I tried to use puTTY with a serial cable connected to the MI port on the back of the machine, but neither the PC nor the AS/400 appeared to be able to see each other. Could anybody help me connect to this machine?

This is an ancient machine. Don't expect it to be useful except as a curiosity. Also, don't expect to find many people who remember the details of setting up such an old machine - the last time we did that was 15 years ago! Here is the manual for setting it up: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/pdfs/as400/V4R5PDF/A4151443.PDF

This is an AS/400... PuTTY and serial won't work, you need a real Twinax terminal, or Twinax PCI/ISA/MCA/PCMCIA card.

I've managed to get a couple of these 9401-150's up and running recently.

I had to resort to twinax connected 5250 terminal though - All attempts at the Ops Console and LAN console failed.
