I have a Physical File, but have no DDS source for it.
Is there a way of recreating the DDS source file, so that I can edit
it to create and amend fields?
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Steve.

do a DSPFFD (Display Field File Discription) on the file. it will give
you all the field names sizes type etc.. I use this now and again
myself!

Steve:

Go to the http://www.news400.com site and look in the shareware
utilities section. There are a number of utilities that will recreate
DDS for PF/LFs.

You can use the command DSPFFD to display the file's field descriptions.

Others have pointed out where you can find utilities for this, but I wanted to
point out that you need to be certain that this was a DDS-created file in the
first place. Especially with SQL use on the rise, you might recreate the file
but not duplicate it, i.e., it might not work exactly as it did before. And if
you're unlucky enough to have this linked to a data dictionary, you might mess
someone else up.

In short, there might never have been any DDS in the first place.

You also need DSPFD to find out about any keys in the file. DSPDBR will
display the logical over the file.

You can use command RTVDSPSRC to retrieve physical file source code.

Use RTVDSPSRC to get the source PF, and either build a program to recreate
the PF or do it by SEU...another way is using DSPFFD, next use DSPDBR to get
the LF's conected to your PF.......Good Luck.

RTVDSPSRC is not included in OS/400. The name of the command makes me think
of Retreive Display Source, which isn't suitable for PFs.
(There is also no RTVDDSSRC command).

As others already mentioned, there mustn't be a DDS from which a file has
been created.

I tried this and got 9 identical records; the last field being Format
Level Identifier ! - what do I do with it now?

TAATOOLS contains RTVPFSRC to retrieve Physical File Source.

Sorry, in my previous message, I misspelled the command. It should be RTVPFSRC.
Thanks David.

Ah!

Thank you, David, i will have to check TAA tools out once again; didn't
think of the commands in there.

from that...Ron

My company sells a product called ARCTOOLS that, amongst other things,
will retrieve DDS source from compiled physical files. It also adds the
archiving feature to any existing purge program without programming, and
it will provide the ability to purge without programming.

Check out my web site at http://www.ziplink.net/~dcsoft/ or send me an
email for more information. If you are interested, I can get you a free
demo.

If you have a current version of TAATOLS there should be a command called
RTVPFSRC that will retrieve physical file source code for you.

Yeah...this is right Steve, use the command CRTTAATOOL to create the tool
RTVPFSRC...if you prompt CRTTAATOOL it'll give u all the info u need.

good luck

What version of OS/400 is CRTTAATOOL in? it doesn't seem to be in V3R1
or V3R2?

Richard,

the user tools have always been there as far as I know but they've disappeared
under the new release and you have to pay for them, but if you've got V3R2 or
earlier you will have them.

Basically you need to have the QUSRTOOL library setup...if it's not then
restore it from save files...if CRTTAATOOL does not exist as a cmd then you
need to create it. Look in the TXT file QATTINFO/CRTTAATOOL in QUSRTOOL for
details of how to create the command.

good luck
Matt
