I would like to look for some rugged handhelds that will do 5250
telnet sessions back to the iSeries, so we don't need to learn a
proprietary hand held programming language.
Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on good hand held
hardware for this type of application? The handheld should also be a
bar code scanner.
We would be designing new 5250 screens, so we would be able to get by
with a limited keyboard or one that's just a pain in the butt for the
few times someone would need to enter in anything other than numbers.
Appreciate any input.
Garry
They can communicate using standard 11mb Wireless protocols, so you
can pop a standard wireless RF card in our Laptop's PCMCIA slot and
run Client Access out in the plant, check email or browse the internet
either one, using the Intermec Access Point/Antenna.
The devices has a 8 line x 16 character display and it supports
programs writing to use a 80 column screen. But its a pain in the butt
to have to scroll left/right/up/down to see the whole screen.
We typically create new program/screens and design them to fit in 16
columns. Our input fields are defined as auto record advance input
fields and we programming the handheld devices to send a FIELD EXIT
code after scanning the barcode so all the user has to do is press the
button and listen for the alarm.
The devices with barcode scanner are around $2,500 each and Access
Point/Antenna are about $900 each. Each access point is good for about
a 400 foot radius on our production fllor.
Setup is as easy as giving each Access Point/RF device an IP
address.That's it installation complete.
We are running V5R1 on a 170 box.
There maybe cheaper/better products but the Intermec scanners have
meet all our needs.
There are also some third party PDA's with barcode and wireless
technology which looks interesting. Run 5250 emulation, check your
email, and browse the web all from one device.

Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.389 / Virus Database: 220 - Release Date: 9/16/2002
The two main producers of such equipment are:
www.symbol.com and www.intermec.com
but there are also alternatives, like:
www.lxe.com
www.pscnet.com
www.denso-id.com
www.datalogic.com
Every one of these companies have more than one product that meet your
requirements. Which one is the right choice for you, you'll have to decide
for yourself....

I'll add this for the hell of it...
We actually used the Symbol Palms... We didn't want AS/400 emulation so what
we did was to build a java client on the palm and a java server on the 400 -
we streamed the data in from the palm directly to the 400 database via TCP.
We used a high port with a java program listening for the palms. This way
let's you do more on the palm with limited memory. It also means you don't
have AS400 telnet sessions open with telnet connections on an open wireless
network connection. Security is the issue here and telnet is easy to emulate
on a drive by hack.
We actually put whole picking lists on the palms...all products picked had
to be barcoded and you couldn't pick the wrong stuff. Our case study is here
http://www.kdpsoftware.co.uk/CaseStudy/WirelessPalm.html it gives you
details of all the hardware.
Cheers

There is a company called eBusiness Solution Pros who can help you
with your requirement. They are a business partner of the company I
work for, Touchtone Corporation. Their website is www.esp400.com and
their handheld solution is called ESP Link Wireless RF 5250. Their
phone number is 714 918 7700. I hope this helps you. Good Luck.

The original poster is right in assuming there is no special code, just fire
it up and go.
We did actually check into the palms, but they just didn't seem to fit the
bill for us. (management
was convinced they'd have a bad habit of walking off, getting sat on, etc.)
There are other vendors as well, but to answer the original posters
concerns, there's nothing to really
be concerned about. (You'll just have a much smaller screen area to work
with.) Do up the screens
using plain vanilla DDS, and code away. Its actually kind of nice to be able
to do all the RF testing
right from the same console you code on.
There are a few other vendors out there who also offer out-of-the-box 5250
handhelds, but since
we don't use them, I can't say much about them.
