Configuration was set up using example in InfoPrint V5.1 User's guide.
When starting virtual *IPDS writer to AFP spool file the spooling
subsystem times out on the printer. I used 5001 as port number, and
also 0, which were both referenced in other postings, but, error in
joblog says cannot connect to the printer a timeout occurs after the
spool file tries and go into PND status, and *NOMAX is set in ACTTMR
in devd. (port 5001 never shows up in NETSTAT??)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks..

Dan, Take a look at the configuration information again and make sure you
have completed all setup. When converting files to PDF, you need to have
the IPS/400 product installed. You need to have the printer device
description printer address set to your loop back address. IPS/400 has
another job running listening on the TCP/IP loop back address to capture
the IPDS data and convert it to PDF (the job basically pretends like it
is an IPDS printer...from the printer writer's point of view).

You cannot send the PDF directly a printer that accepts PDF. Your only
options are to e-mail the PDF, or direct it to somewhere in IFS.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but I suspect it isn't what
IPS/400 and PSF/400 are designed to do. More details would be helpful.

5722-IP1 has been installed w/latest PTF's. printer file has been
created for *AFPDS and program is writing to device. CRTPSFCFG was
used to create configuration pointing to *STMF folder on IFS, all
appropriate authority is working, and ADDDIRE was used for QSPLJOB
that was needed. Local loopback address is 127.0.0.1 as stated in
infoprint manual for Infoprint device location name- port 5001 was
tried as was port 0 as specified in various manuals for *IP *LAN
printers. when starting strprtwtr to spooled file to the specified
device, it says reason code 22, cannot find printer, even though it
says varied on, and i have changed the INACTTMT to *NOMAX. thanks.

psf/400 has been installed, and a similar error message regarding not
communicating with the writer is still there. no active port number
(5001), shows up under netstat, but, when i create a *hp4000 3812
*AFP, as a test, it shows up under netstat.

Dan, I found out some little pitfalls that you would run into that are probably the root cause of your problems
trying to get this to work.

1. You need to start the transform manager prior to starting your printer writers (STRTFMMGR).
2. You need to install the PASE environment Option 33 prior to starting the transform manager.

BTW, When transforming to PDF, you should be able to use any port number you want. It is recommended that you
use values above the well known ports (above 1024).

thanks for all the advice. my customer has a model 400, no e-series,
and hence no PASE. we didn't think it was necessary for InfoPrint
output to PDF only. they are now ordering an upgrade for the
week-end, and hopefully my job now, thanks, to you, will be easier.

UPDATE _ IBM has defect in 5722-IP1 both in documentation and on
distributed media. PASE is not required if using PDF only, the
ENDTFRMMFR command is mis-spelled in Infoprint User's guide, there is
a message file missing in QSYS, has to be copied from QIPS, and you
cannot create a pdf file (*STMF) in a directory if the directory
already exists. Also, support for QDLS is not there, only root files
until corrected.
