We have used a product to download AS400 spool files (print files) to our
PC's into Word and Excel, has anyone else had experience with other methods
of transferring spool files to the PC they would share?.

My company has an application that will allow you to view your spool files
from the web, then you have the option to save the file to text, html, or
csv files. For more information:

Hi Robert

There are plenty of tools that will do this, from commercial through
shareware to free. I see two stages in the process - 1) conversion to PC
text file on the AS/400 (IFS) and 2) transfer to the PC.

Stage 1 can be as simple as a CPYSPLF followed by a CPYTOSTMF, which will
give you text data ready for import into Excel (via the text import
wizard).

I find RUNRMTCMD very useful for the second stage, as that works nicely on
both our Windows boxes running Client Access' Incoming Remote command and
my Linux box running a rexecd daemon. An alternative is to use the QNTC
filesystem to map your PC drives onto the AS/400.

I have a free WRKSPLF/WRKOUTQ hybrid tool[1] that combines both stages -
fairly basic but it gets the job done, but you might want to look at some
of the many spool to .csv tools around. I've only got personal experience
of CoolSpools400[2] as we've recently bought that at work (though mainly
for its .pdf conversion) which will do stage one for you, but there are
plenty of others[3] :)

Regards, Martin

[1]WRKUSROUTQ on my dbg400 site (see .sig below) - Look at the extras

The shareware product SPLTOOL by Brad Stone has a variety of ways to get a
spool file to a PC. One I especially like is emailing the spool file to
myself, then I simply detach the spool file attachment onto my hard drive.

See www.bvstools.com.

Hello,

My company sells an AS/400 command that creates Excel(.XLS), not CSV,
from AS/400 spooled files. The Convert Spooled File (CVTSPLF) command
creates binary compabitible Excel spreadsheets with accurate column
widths, with one set of fixed headings and the ability to select detail
lines of a report.
