Hi,

I am curious if there is a product that allows one to write RPG code
(and possibly compile it? Probably not.) on a PC.

Thanks,

Yes you can.
Check out BABY/400 by California Software at www.calsw.com .

Also, IBM has a product called CODE/400. It is an excellent RPG
(and lots of other languages) editor with full syntax checking, abit
like the way Word/97 auto spell checks. But you can't compile the
source on the PC, you have to do that on the AS400.

There's another product that comes with a Dongle but I can't recall
its name:)

You can also use any text editor (notepad!) to write RPG code, I've
done quite abit using Excel and Word, but only in emergency!

Cheers
Larry

Lattice, (www.lattice.com) also produces RPG for PCs. But allow me to warn
you, at least on Lattice's older products, the PC procedures differ
greatly from an AS400.

We also supply a product that allows you to write RPG code on the PC, called
Flex/EDIT. The compiles still take place on the AS/400.

You can get a free trial at: http://www.aldon.com

interested in writing RPG II on a pc.

Thanks,

To get random signatures put text files into a folder called ³Random
Signatures² into your Preferences folder.

Yes, it sure does. Just took me a few attempts.

IBM has a product called Visual Age for RPG. This product is pretty much
like Visual Basic (execpt it's rpg). It compiles and runs on the PC. It
can access data on the AS/400 or DB/2 on the network or (soon to be
announced) any other data via ODBC.

It is a great tool. I have been using along with Their SDA replacement
(Flex/Designer) for quite some time now. These two programs ROCK and
ROLL! My productivity has increased by about 30 - 40 % with them. I can
create a display file within a couple minutes and modify one in seconds.
Flex/Edit has some NICE customization options and has some nice features
in it. Flex/Debug is a sweet for display files. If you need to move a
field to a different location on the screen, insert a field. just drag
the old field where you want it and insert the new one. as simple as
that.

(Although I have yet to get their debbugger to work :( )

Richard,

i'm not so enthusiastic about Flex/Edit. But that may be caused by some
installation problems and a different environment, so i do think that i'm
not in the position to judge.
I do not want to explain any further, as there will be a new version of it
sometime in spring. That version is said to be a 32bit version supporting
TCP/IP. (source: Jason Maddy Jma...@aldon.com )

Wow, another "Aspiring xxx" entry in your signature! :-)

Another product that allows you to edit your RPG with a PC editor and
compile and debug on the host and includes a powerful screen and report
designer, is CODE/400.

We just came out with a new release and the free Try & Buy will be
available in a week or two.

I forgot to add that CODE/400 also has the option to compile your RPG
locally. That is, it will catch all the errors and take you directly to
them but it will not generate an object. Once you have have eliminated
all your compile errors, you can then hit another key and compile it on
the host with guaranteed success. Another keystroke and you are
debugging ...

Background Info:

Used Systems/3X and AS/400 for 10 years.
Know Query and took it as far as it'll go.
Don't have a damn clue about RPG/400
Don't have a clue about ANY programming
Really NEED to learn RPG/400.
And IF I learn RPG/400 now, what good does it do me if our system is
not yet Y2K compliant??
Currently OS/400 V3R0M5
With MAPICS DB Mod4 (NOT Y2K compliant either)

IBM's Visual Age for RPG.
ALDON's Flex/Edit
CODE/400

I know all these programs are out there and probably more than I've
not read about in this group. However I'm looking for a PC program
that I can install on my home PC and learn RPG in. I need to know if
there is ANY program out there that I can do this with. Also do any of
these compile on the PC if you're on or offsite?

I'm looking for offsite products simply because there's no way to
concentrate on it at work.
Obviously from this ya'll can tell I'm just getting into RPG
programming. Wasn't much of my own choice considering I've no one at
work to learn it from. However I can be dumb and take on any challenge
that's thrown at me, so bear with me if you will and just give me the
facts please.

Thanks!!!!

(Don't bother with the E-Mail address, it isn't real. Keeps sale
people from constantly annoying me!!)

Check out California Software Products at www.calsw.com. I think they have
what you're looking for...probably called Baby 400 or something like that.
