Hi,

I'm recently installed V4R4 on our AS/400 and am in the process of rolling
out Client Access Express V4R4 to users and allowing access to the IFS via
NetServer. All pcs are running NT workstation 4 and connecting to a NT
network. My problem is that the users NetServer account keeps getting
disabled due to incorrect logins even though the user has not even attempted
to access the IFS. My guess is that the clients are automatically trying to
access the IFS using the Windows NT password which is different to the
AS/400 password and this is disabling the profile on the 400.

Could anybody either let me know whether that is my problem, and if so how
to stop client from automatically attempting to connect ?

Many Thanks,
Larry Neylon

Hi there

Download the following redbook. It´s quite clear written in there....

The AS/400 NetServer Advantage, SG24-5196-00

AS/400 NetServer authenticates client file and print requests that are based
on the user ID and password that are used in the Windows desktop logon. If
an AS/400 user profile matches the Windows desktop client user profile, then
the passwords are checked. If the passwords do not match, AS/400 NetServer
prompts the client to enter the correct one. For a better understanding of
AS/400 NetServer user profile authentication, refer to Table 2.

That table is on page 52 in the redbook. Unfortunately I cannot cut and
paste the table here.

Best regards

Henrick,

...reading the manual isn't always the same as actually being
there. <g>

>> AS/400 NetServer prompts the client to enter the correct one...

...not unless it is the user that requests the NetServer resource
in the first place. What Larry is referring to is some kind of covert
conversation going on between NT and the AS/400 NetServer. And it's
damn annoying. Without ever prompting or warning the user of anything,
NT and the AS400 decide between themselves to disable the user's
NetServer account.

And the manual, IMHO, sheds absolutely no light on the subject
whatsoever. <s>

Also interested in the answer,
Mark

As Mark points out in his answer the problem I have is that there appears to
be some under-the-cover attempts to connect to the NetServer from the client
that is disabling the NetServer user Id.

All out NT and AS/400 users have the same user ID, e.g. NEYLONL. If the NT
and AS/400 passwords are the same then there is no problem. It is where the
user Id's are the same, but the passwords are different, the AS/400
NetServer user id's are getting disabled even before the user attempts to
connect to the NetServer. I can see the qsysopr message telling me that the
user Id is disabled, but no attempt has been made to connect.

What I would like to find out is how to disable the hidden connection
attempts.

Thanks,
Larry

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head, do you have the
periodic service level check enabled? Check under the service tab of the
CA prosperities.
