I face a problem last week and couldn't solve.

When I use WRKCFGSTS *DEV for a device, the status is active (but no job
number).
Actually that terminal is off and no message in message message queue.
When I try
to vary off , system return CPD2643 vary off failed because of device is
being in use
or wait time not long enough. I want to know how to vary off that
device.

Thanks

I had this problem a week or two ago. The problem is that QSYSARB has a
lock on the device (which is normal) but will not relinquish it. IBM
offered two solutions:
1) IPL
2) Use a lockbuster program. I cannot recall the name of the program but
it is supplied by IBM support.
We went for option 1.

Now that I am at work I have more information - the lockbuster is called
QCMNGETL - please refer to APAR SA56482 for OS400 r3.2. Document 9700631
at the AS400 Technical Support site
(http://as400service.rochester.ibm.com/techinfodb.html will get you there)
explains more. I would like to know if you have any success with it.

David Fosdike is right, IPL or use the IBM supplied program that will
free up the DEVICE from QSYSARB. I have tried the program and freed the
device successfully. It is a good mean if you are unable to IPL. Your IBM
software support buddy should provide you with the program that came in my
case as a PTF from ECS. IBM also gave me a PTF for the lock situation. It
was on V3R1 on a 9406 F45.

Good luck,
Daniel.

Thank you very much. It happens exacton on F45 V3R1. I am now looking
for
the PTF number.

I have faced the same type of thing, usually a printer... no job number but
there is usually the aforementioned nonexistent job locked up that you can
find by doing a WRKACTJOB, then looking for the device name. Once found, I
just end that non-existent job and voila, the device is freed, then you
should be able to vary off and or on until your heart is content.

doesn't happen often, but when it does, I hear the xfiles music playing in
the background, so take it or leave it...

The stranger thing i ever heard...

If this makes you nervous enough to invest some time, get yourself the
latest PTF list via ECS.

SNDPTFORD SF97vrm, where vrm stands for version, release, modification.

When finished, browse member QSF97vrm in QGPL/QAPZCOVER.

Do this even when you have the latest cum installed, as there are quite a
lot of PTFs that aren't included in any cum PTF package. One of them might
solve this. You can then order PTFs in the same way, maybe the cover letter
only first. The cover letter will be stored in the same file.

Best regards
