Hello,

Can you help me?

I have a printer attached to the network, and i want to know if the printer
is already be named on the as400 system? All i know is the ip number of the
printer and the physical location. When i ping, i get a respons back. But
now i want to use this printer, but i don't know the name of the printer. Is
there a way to find the printername on the as400 with only the ip number as
help?

The printer's brand name is the HP Laserjet 4+

Thanks in advance...

Create an outq (call it anything)... that will be the name you refer to the
printer from the AS/400.

Use CRTOUTQ (F4)... under Remote System, enter the IP address (or enter the
IP address in the system host table (CFGTCP) and refer to the system name
here).
Under Remote printer queue, enter "pass".
Connection type "IP"
Destination "Other"

That should just about do it.
You may need to fiddle with the code pages etc. to get the right font and
page size.

Johan, The AS/400 does not AUTOMATICALLY configure printer device descriptions
for LAN attached printers (auto config is a twin-ax specific feature). That
does not mean a printer device description hasn't already been created (or as
Bryan has mentioned creation of a remote output queue).

If you wanted to be able to find if a printer had been configured for a
particular IP address, you could write a utility that uses the API QDCRDEVD
(format 1100) and compares the IP address (which you would input) with the
value specified in the device description. You would need to take and convert
host names to IP addresses to handle the case where a host name was used
instead of the IP address. The tool could also be expanded to use the QSPROUTQ
API to determine if a remote output queue had been configured.

Of course, you could go through the many printer device descriptions and output
queues by hand (although I think I could write the utility quicker...especially
if there are hundreds of printer devices and output queues).

If a printer device is not configured, I'd suggest creating one (rather than
use the remote output queue method...which brings a number of performance and
usability issues into the picture...not that the HP PJL driver method is
perfect either).
