Hello,

currently i am starting with the database design on AS/400.

Are there tools available which create SQL DDL scripts (CRETA TABLE) for
existing database objects?

This would be very helpful for documentation and reverse engineering.

Are there tools which process SQL scripts (with more than one CREATE TABLE
command)?
I have found an article about DB2 UDB for UDB which says that there is a SQL
Development Kit for AS/400 including scripting support.
The DB2 UDB 7 also includes no-charge cross-platform tools (like stored
procedure builder) - would it be possible to access the DB2 UDB for AS/400
using these tools if i only install the free Personal Edition?

Many thanks in advance!

Michael,
in order to access DB2 on AS/400 you need to use DB2 Connect PE. (Other
options include DB2 Connect EE, DB2 UDB EE.) I suggest that you
download DB2 Connect PE v7 from IBM web site.
DB2 Command Center and Script Center are included in it.
DB2 SDK you need in order to develop applications - I think that is not
what you want.

You can also access DB2 UDB for AS/400 using the Client Access
product... I am not up on the latest CA features, so cannot say whether
it has DDL scripting support. Probably other newsgroup followers will
know, but here is a link for possible investigation.. check out
Operations Navigator.

Hi,

if you dont mind using green screen interface there is a free tool
available on www.as400network.com - look for tool RTVSQLSRC in the may
1998 issue.

This utility will create ddl request from the file description.

Hello,

'almost' found the free RTVSQLSRC tool - but www.as400network.com wants me
to pay $149 to get a 'professional membership' first... and other internet
search engines only come up with some spanish translations of the article...
*sniff*

In addition to the utility mentioned here, you should look at the 3rd party ER
tools such as ERwin, SystemArchitect, etc. IBM is working on a generate SQL DDL
option for Client Access Operations Navigator.

The DB2 UDB Control Center support for AS/400 is fairly limited. Have you
looked at the SQL Script capabilities in Client Access Operations Navigator?
It's a no charge, GUI-based SQL Script processor. The SQL Development Kit
includes the RUNSQLSTM CL command for SQL script execution - it's the green
screen version of the

many thanks for this hint - we have an evaluation copy of Popkin
SystemArchitect, but to pay about $5000 to get the included SQL DDL
extraction tool wouldn't make my boss very happy (is Erwin still available?
If i look at the web page at Computer Associates, it has not been updated
since 1998).
So we will wait until Operations Navigator allows to create SQL DDL scripts.
In my opinion, a really important (missing) feature in the set of DB/2
tools. The SQL DDL extraction isn't that hard to do, much smaller RDBMS with
a higher SQL level than DB2 (SQL99) can do it and it is very necessary for
documentation (ok i can do screenshots from within Operations Navigator :-).

Not yet, many thanks for this hint also.

ERwin is still available, but they've been owned by so many different companies
over the last couple of years it's hard to describe the latest state of their
product.
