Hi All,

I am an AS/400 novice. I inherited an AS/400e V4R5M0. I would like to
start it properly, but using the startup procedures described in the
IBM documentation does not help.
I found some info here:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/SG248253/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm
and here:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/index.jsp?topic=/rzajr/rzajrtroublesrc.htm

The system plug was pulled by some imbecile, and now it wont start
properly. It seems to run all the C.../.... IPL/SRC properly, but a
login menu does not appear. It stands on the display of the server at
A6005090.

What does it mean and how can I get the system up properly again?

All help greatly appreciated!

Al

Sounds like an adapter didn't report in time

Check this thread....You may need IBM on this one.

Thanx for the tip. I got one step further it seems. I powerd down the
system and cleaned all the controller and HD contacts. Now at least a
service menu appears.

I see following:
ASP: 1
Unit: 3
Type: 6713
Model: 050
S/N: xxx
Resource Name: DD002
Status: Configured

With F11:
All the above +
System Bus: 1
Controller: 2
I/O Bus: 0

With -5- Detailed Address

Type, Mod, S/N & Resource Name same as above

SPD BUS:
System Bus: 1
System Board: 0
System Card: 1

Storage
I/O Adapter -
I/O Bus: 0
Controller: 2
Device: 0

- The message says to do the following -
With F3 -> DST -> Start Service Tool -> Hardware Service Manager
Preference Codes:

The Menu is in French! OK, I got someone with school french and online
Dictionaries at hand.

1. ...
2. ...
3. ... DST

I started 3. ...DST

It brings a Disk Configuration Error Report.
Error: Missing disk units in the configuration

I hope this info sheds light into the problem. There are 3 HDD and a
CD-Rom, as well as a QIC Tape Drive 4/8 GB.

If it is only the QIC Tape, can I use one from another system? I got
one to use as 'parts'.

TIA

Progress Report 2:

I powered down again and tried the same as before; maybe an
intermittent contact problem. Now it is back to the original state
with A600 5090.

It seems to be something mechanical? On the display I see on the
bottom:

1 >> <Setup> <Basis> <Grdst> <Host> 01/001

Is this a stage before the ASP report I saw after the first cleaning
of the contacts, or afterwards?

TIA

Progress Report 3:

I saw inside the case a label that marks two HD's as 6137. They are
the two closest to the SCSI connector on the Motherboard, where the
controller is. There are also 3 PCI type SCSI cards (2 half length
cards with SLI chips and 1 full length card with an Intel chip) in the
slots following the CPU card, without anything but the external
connector of one to the terminal on 'Port 0'

I do not seem to get the Service Menu any more. Do I get there with
some keyboard special key's? The monitor shows only the:

1 >> <Setup> <Basis> <Grdst> <Host> 01/001

TIA

A missing disk is likely the issue. The hard down from the unit being
unplugged could have crashed the head. The older disks were known for
sticktion problems where the head parks and gets stuck. Usually
tapping or hitting the disk will free the head, but the problem will
probably show back up the next time the system is powered off.

The long term solution is replacing the disk.

I tried it. Bit hesitant to knock old type HD's, they were so fragile.
No change when patting it on the side, whilst it is still in the
mounted in the frame. I have to take it out. It is Unit 3 according to
the error log. It is an IBM DGHS COMP IEC-950 (15MAR99 09U FRU PN
59H6611). Is this one of the older ones with the heads park getting
stuck? How hard do they need to be tapped? Where are the heads parked;
right, left, or center? Old MFM and SCSI disks used to park on the
side - you could see the park position on the shape of the case.

Tapping on the disk is not without risk, but if your disk is dead, it
really can't hurt......
I wouldn't tap on the tin that protects the disk and head....firmly
tap, with the but end of a screwdriver, on the side of the disk where
the mounting screws would be on a PC hard disk......The idea is to
unstick the data arm.

Hi J.T.F,

It worked out to be a hard disk failure. The server was rebuilt from
backups with 2x new 8GB HD's with a mirror. It also now has 2x4GB
mirrored drives for the OS. After running a few days, it seems another
problem with the controller surfaced. It is in for repairs now.

It seems that the electronics did not like the downtime of a week
during the companies relocation - it used to run 24x7. I had this
problem with other HW in the past. Once systems run 24x7 the
electronics is quite happy that the constant heat keeps corrosion, dry
joints and component wear & tear low. It has done its service since
1998 without any major problems! Actually, it is good HW that lasts
that long. The AS/400 system has been migrated to a new web 2.0 erpii
LAMP system now; it only now serves as check for data transfer during
the migration.

Thanx for the help.

Great to hear......hopefully you can re-pupose that box at a later
date until it completely dies.
