Yaddayadda,
It seems you are misinformed by the software vendor. You need to upgrade
via a set of lower releases, but not all of them.
Look at the internetpage
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/handbook/v5r1/5486Ops.htm
On that page you will find a table Supported Upgrade Paths that shows
which update steps to take.
1) V3R7 to V4R3
2) V4R3 to V4R5
3) As last step, if the software vendors application support V5R1 you
may want to do the upgrade to V5R1.
Why make a very reliable backup of your system: GO SAVE option 21 and
use all the options you need and do the update yourself? The
installation and update manuals are very good.
I recommend to do the update in steps as denote by 1), 2) and 3) and
make backups after each step. Each step may take half a day upto a
complete day.

*Question is: "Will V4Rx or V5R1 run on a 9402-400? I would investigate
that first before upgrading."*

Jan, the problem may be here. V4R3 is no longer delivered by IBM. So,
if he wants to do it himself, Yaddayadda must be able to get this
release.
