I currently use Copy2lan to convert a print spool file to a physical file.
I then use IBM Client Access Transfer From AS400 to transfer it as text file
to my PC, which I then convert to excel, etc....

What I would like to do is access the spool files directly from the PC and
convert the files to a PC text file without having to use the Copy2lan
command. Is there any software out there that does this? Also, is there a
search command that allows me to find the spoolfile without having to know
which user or outputq it is in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To transmit spooled file to PC use "AS/400 Operations Navigator for
Win95/NT" - component of CA/400

Greg, Spooling on the AS/400 is more complex than you realize. If you wanted
to access the data of the spooled file directly, you could use the
QSPGETSP API. However, this data is NOT IN TEXT FORM. This is the RAW data
stream like ANY spooling system. To extract the text from the spooled file,
you would have to know which data stream format the data was stored in (*AFPDS,
*SCS, *LINE, etc). AS/400 is also an EBCDIC machine, so you would need to
convert the EBCDIC to ASCII.

As to accessing the spooled file without the user name, what would you use? To
UNIQUELY identify a spooled file on the AS/400, you need the Qualified job name
(job name, USER name, job number) that the spooled file is stored (usually same
as created) under. You also need the spooled file name, and the spooled file
number. Some APIs allow accessing a spooled file through the use of internal
identifiers (one for job and one for spooled file). These identifiers are
generated by the system, so the user still needs to know the qualified job
name, spooled file name, and spooled file number.

Spooled files are usually found in one of four (more popular) ways: Listing by
output queue, listing by user, list by printer device, and listing by job. You
can also list by ASP, user data, and form type.

I have some shareware that may do this. It's called Spooled File tools
(SPLTOOL) and can be downloaded at http://www.bvstools.com

It will copy a spooled file to your PC via Shared Folders, IFS, or FTP
(the PC must be running an FTP server).

For finding spooled files without knowing the outq, the SPLTOOL
interface will allow you to do this as well. You can select which
spooled files to view by user, file name, user data, etc.. etc..
specifying *ALL for any or none of these fields. Download it and check
it out.

That's a great answer......

If you have Operations Navigator installed and running on your desktop
and your AS/400.....

Hi Greg,

Symtrax has a software called Compleo to do what you mentioned. With
one software, you can access your AS/400 spool files and import or
convert them into the PC application of your choice, among other
things, as you mentioned Excel. The process is all point and click -
really easy to use. You can view the spool file under User Name, Spool
Name, etc. You can also do searches on outqueues or by AS/400 for the
spool file that you want to access. Check out http://www.symtrax.com
or call 800-627-6013 for more information or to evaluate the software
for 30 days.

Just curious Diana, but can't Symtrax afford to give you a real Internet
email address ? :-)
