Can I do an entire system backup, remotely?

Last night I attempted to do an entire system backup to tape, from home
using a laptop with a modem. I typed "go save" and did option 21 (save
entire system). I was then told that I needed to transfer my job into the
controlling subsystem because all subsystems will be ended. I used the
"trfjob" command to transfer my job to QCTL subsystem. I then attempted to
do the save entire system again, and it looked like it was going to work,
but after a minute of waiting to see what was going to happen, I got a
message saying "ENDSBS *ALL not allowed in current environment". I have
always been under the impression that QCTL subsystem never goes down during
the save entire system, so ENDSBS *ALL would leave QCTL up. Does anybody
have any suggestions? Can this even be done?

Thanks,

How are you dialing into your system? thru an ascii controller? a lan? and what
protocol?

I have set up a connecttion thru a lan using client access that connected with
SNA thru Microsofts SNA server. In my client access I set my workstation ID as
"REMOTE". I then added a workstation in QCTL using the command ADDWSE
SBSD(QCTL) WRKSTN(REMOTE). After connecting to the AS400 I would do an ENDSBS
*ALL *IMMED, log off you will then see the subsystem change on your screen to
QCTL from QINTER. You can now log on and do the backup.

I hate to be picky, but did you actually *do* a SAVSYS? Wouldn't you
still have a comms subsystem entry? (I don't run the M$ stuff, so
I can't try this out).

Hoever, V4R4 will let you configure a remote console via dial-up:
but we've been running full SYS/NONSYS backups remotely for
years using DLYJOB in a CL program that gets triggered from the console.
(You have to be able to get everything on to one tale, or use an
automated loader for this to work, however).
