My company currently uses ETU/400 to upload or download data between AS/400
and PCs. ETU/400 provides CL commands that run from the AS/400 and can be
included in CL programs. In other words, all file transfers are initiated
from the server AS/400 side. ETU/400 transfers the data to/from PC using
old emulation APIs. We are moving to IBM's Client Access Express for our
TN5250 emulation. However, we have discovered that ETU/400 does not work
with IBM's TN5250. I understand that IBM does include data transfer in the
Client Access Express product, but the data transfer is initiated from the
client (PC) side in this product. I also understand that IBM does provide
ability to run remote commands as part of Client Access Express, but
unfortunately our network security policies and implementation make this
ability unworkable. I am investigating a couple of products that transfer
DB2/400 files to/from the IFS where PC applications can access them. Access
to the IFS is a problem because our network user id's and AS/400 user ids
are not the same and NetServer (ie how I can map a network drive to access
the IFS from PC) does not give me much flexibility in this area. I do
understand that I can implement anonymous access with NetServer, but I
really don't want to do so for security reasons.

So my question for this group is -- how are the rest of you doing data
transfer between AS/400 and PC? Do your users initiate data transfers from
their PCs? Or do you have AS/400 based programs that can be menu driven?
Does anyone have a product or method for transferring data directly to/from
user's PC hard drive when PC and AS/400 are connected via TCP/IP? Any
suggestions, ideas, etc you can offer are GREATLY appreciated.

I mostly initiate FTP from my pc to send and receive files from our
AS400.

One guy setup a FTP sever on his pc, so the AS400 could FTP files back
to himself.

A couple guys here file share an AS400 folder and uses Windows
Explorer to copy/paste files back and forth from there harddrives to
the shared AS400 folder. Then CPYFRMPCD to their library.

We also use the SNDDST command to email files to peoples pc's. That
works quite well because they don't have to be signed-on or have their
pc on. The file sits on the internal mail server until they check
their email.

Client Access Express has a Send and Receive file menu option but I
have never used it, never needed it.

I can open a DOS box and FTP a file to/or from our AS400 in seconds.

If I want the AS400 to initiate a file transfer back to me. A simple
SNDDST command puts the file in my mailbox just a quick.

As usual there are lots of ways to do this. Let me ask a question, why are the
users downloading the data ? If it's like my shop, then it's to assemble a
report in Excel. If that's the case, I've had great success writing VBA code
behind Excel to pull the data down for them via ODBC. The reports are automated,
always work, are up to the minute, and have the same look no matter who does
them. The downside is that IT needs to create the report initially before anyone
can use it. I take this one step further. Other than plain old green bar audit
trails, I don't do ANY reports on the AS/400 anymore. Excel is a much better
tool for that IMHO.

My 2¢ worth. I'm sure others will have different favorites.

Dana,

Our Alliance CrossData/400 product can convert database files to PC
format and put the data in an IFS directory. Lots of APIs to get data in
the formats you want. PC files can also be loaded to AS/400 database
files without programming.

For transfer directly to PC hard drives you can use our Alliance FTP
Manager product. Has lots of automation components and APIs to make this
easy to do. You need an FTP server (Microsoft or someone else's) to
receive the file.

Hello,

You can add our product to the list of "products that transfer

DB2/400 files to/from the IFS where PC applications can access them"

Our CVTDBF command creates Excel(real .XLS not .CSV files) from
AS/400 db2 files.

Get an evaluation at http://www.kemetech.com. Our next release, which
will be released on the 26th, will support the creation of multiplesheet
spreadsheets based on a
field name or generated from members in the file, fixed headings and
fixed columns and @SUM, @COUNT, @MIN, @MAX and @AVG formulas by column
or as row endings.

In article <vEKr6.87259$__6.173...@typhoon.southeast.rr.com>,
dan...@mediaone.net says...

I just use the /QNTC file system. When you have the AS/400 Netserver
running all Windows (NT?) shares on your local network are accessible via
/QNTC.

I simply use the following command.
CPYTOIMPF FROMFILE(MYLIB/MYFILE)
TOSTMF('/QNTC/PCNAME/SHARENAME/FILENAME.CSV')

Also, sometimes I'll use the FTP:
open myas400
cd mylib
get myfile /QNTC/PCNAME/SHARENAME/FILENAME.CSV
quit

This doesn't require the PCs to have an FTP server, you are using the FTP
client and server on the AS/400.

I'm a big fan of QNTC, its made my life much easier. Also note that you
can use it with hidden shares, such as the default admin shares NT
creates for each drive (C$, D$, ect.)

I've done similar things with MS Access and Passthrough queries. Once I
figured out a method for creating parameter queries on the fly (I don't get
much cooperation or support from our AS/400 folks to do stored procedures,
for some reason), I was able to pull the data down and put it into a report
very quickly. The main advantage Access has over Excel is some additional
formatting possibilities. And you can easily export the data to Excel, Word
or another Windows application using OLE.

We used to use ETU to transfer spooled files the requests being initiated
from the AS/400. I wrote a little VB App to do what ETU did using Data
queues. The user still makes the request on the 400 which starts the VB prog
on the PC. It works well and could easily be made more spohisticated.
