Informal survey:

How many of you are using the IBM Network Station or IBM NetVista Thin
Client?
If you are...
Are you using 3270 or 5250 emulation?

Okay, my reasons for asking...

We have been using these devices.
The NetVista Thin Client is being withdrawn.
We are looking at another product as a possible replacement.
That product does not currently include 5250 emulation.
I want to know whether there is a market out there (AS/400 shops) for
a device to replace the IBM Thin Clients if it were to include 3270
and/or 5250 emulation. That might enable me to persuade the vendor to
add that capability.

Thanks for any & all feedback.

I wouldn't go with a thin without TN5250 in some form or TN3270. Without
the emulator, I am not to sure if your entering into a dangerous situation
unless of course all your apps run through a web browser or citrix or??

Beware. I went through this with a client that needed 5250 and "true" 3489
graphics emulation for an imaging application. IBM's Linux version of their
current product line is the ONLY device I could find that would perform and
they were more expensive than a reasonable PC. It also used Netscape for the
built-in browser.

Wyse currently makes a thin client with built-in 5250/3270 emulation.

My thoughts exactly. Even if our application were 100% GUI (and it
is) I would want to have access to a command prompt. That's why I'm
pressing the vendor for 5250 emulation.

Lee, be careful with some of these stripped down emulators you can't do squat.

Hi Lee,

You may take a look at www.affirmative.net . They sell ThinClient with a
good 5250 emulation.

That IS an interesting device. Odd that the Linux version of the
product costs more than the Windows CE version.

The device I am considering costs much less: the NIC, from
www.thinknic.com, costs $199. It is also Linux based. But, at
present it lacks 5250 emulation. That's not a problem for us, but
could be for others.
