I have uninstalled CA/400 for Windows 95/NT and the SF40828 Service Pack
from a Compaq Armada 7710 Laptop with an Ethernet connection. Now when
I try to reinstall CA/400, I cannot. I am warned that the version I am
installing is older than the version last installed. Apparently, I have
not completely removed the software. Any advice on complete removal of
CA/400 for Windows 95/NT?

Hi Andrew,

From the News/400 (http://www.news400.com) Newsletter;

______________________________
WEEKLY TECH TIP: REINSTALLING CLIENT ACCESS FOR WIN95/NT WITH SERVICE PACK
If you delete Client Access for Windows 95/NT's Client Access
folder and a Service Pack is installed, reinstalling Client
Access is difficult. The install will fail because of a catch-22
problem: The Windows 95/NT Registry still shows a Service Pack
installed, but you can't uninstall the Service Pack because the
uninstall log is missing, along with the rest of the folder.

A workaround is to edit the Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\ClientAccess\CurrentVersion,
which holds the current Service Pack level for Client Access. You
must clear, or edit, three key values: CurrentFixLevel,
NewFixLevel, and PreviousFixLevel. To clear these values, you
delete the data value for each entry. If you clear the key
values, the Client Access install will succeed.

Always remember that modifying the Registry is risky; if you make
a mistake, you can render your PC inoperable. Thus, be sure to
make a backup copy of your PC's Registry before you make the
above changes.

Aaahh, Client Access Uninstall .... Funny, that; takes about an hour to
install and about half a minute to uninstall. Where's the catch? I don't
know what it removes, but it took me another hour to hunt down all the
directories, files and registry entries that it splattered over my system.
Is there something as a 'Worst Uninstall Award'?

Andy,
I believe you will find that it is usually a good idea to uninstall
the service pack before uninstalling client access. Always make sure you
have the "uninstall" option of the service pack checked for the first
install. To get you out of the problem that you are having now... I would
suggest that you use modify the remaining registry entries/keys pertinent to
Client Access by using REGEDIT. You can search on Client~1. Be EXTREMELY
careful though because if you are not sure of what you are doing in the
registry... you can really mess up your day. Good Luck & Hope this helps.
