I need to connect either a 5250 terminal or a 5250 terminal emulator in my
office to a client's Advanced 36 model 9402-236 using a switched line.

My IBM rep says that dial in connectively is missing from the 9402-236.
She suggested that my client upgrade to a 9402-426.

Until my client upgrades (they say they'll be ready in about 10 years),
it may be worthwhile to explore alternative solutions. The 9402-236 looks
like it can handle a synchronous, switched line modem. A telcom friend of
mine says that it's possible to connect a commonly available Micom PAD to
a terminal/PC in my office. The Micomm PAD converts a serial port to X.25
protocol, which is then feed into a synchronous modem in my office. A
switched connection exists between the two synchronous modems.

It appears that you can configure a 9402-236 to accept an X.25 connection.
Does anyone know if what I propose is feasable? (i.e. plugging a terminal/PC
into a Micom PAD and initiating an X.25 session with a 9402-236.) Thanks.

Donald,

In brief answer to your questions, get a 5251 Model 12 and Sync modem
like Motorola UDS 9648T. I know there are faster modems that will handle
this
job but I have one of these working on a model 236 from LR to Alabama.

Beware of your IBM Rep A. Some are more knowledgabel than others B.
the
236 machine is "dead" and rumor has it the 436 will be dead Mid 1998. BTW
the 436 is said to be 30% more processor and I can say through experience
it
is visibly faster. (just think, mid year they will be CHEAP!)

First, the 236 and 436 run at the same speed if they have the same base
processor. Second, the communications options in SSP only are the same between
the 236 and 436. (I have about 15 236/436 systems, some upgraded, some not, so
have just a smidge of experience on them).

Third, the person at IBM that told you, you had to upgrade to a 436 to get what
you wanted, unless your application required OS/400 didn't know beans from
cornbread, as it is simply not true.

If you want to do remote connectivity on the 236 assuming that you have either
the single line or dual line (2609/2612 9609/9612), you can accomplish it in
several ways.

First you can get a pc, put in a REMOTE card ("andrew", IO, and others make
such), get a synchrous modem on both ends and configure in configssp it as a
remote controller and that is one way to accomplish it. Another way is with a
5251 Model 12 station. Another way is with a 5294/5394 controller and modem
and the 5294's are cheap as dirt, and you attach the terminal to it. Another
way is with something like the "andrew" interlynx/400, that connects to twinax
on the 236 (so no communications lines are necessary), and you can use cheap pc
modems and use a pc on the remote end. You configure the interlynx/access box
as "local" terminals. If you want more information, you might visit
www.system3x.com which is system 3x/4xx warehouse and you can call their
engineers as they sell lots of the stuff you need (new) and they also have
things like the dial in boxes, etc.

It is NOT necessary to upgrade the 236 to a 436 to accomplish this using good
old v24 rs232 connections.
