Hey all,

Does anyone know of a good 5250 emulator for linux? I have found tn5250,
but that is lacking macro support and full support for all 24 fcn keys.
Are there any other 5250 emulators for linux?

Really? I use it almost every day and all 24 function keys are
working just fine. ;-)

There is some customization needed to make all function keys work,
the documentation will tell you more.

Try http://www.mochasoft.dk

It's not free, but the pricing is very reasonable.

The windows version comes with macro support, don't know about
the linux version, as I am perfectly happy with the open source
tn5250. :-)

Have a look at www.linomasoftware.com. If you're on OS/400 V4R3 and up, you
can download a free Surveyor/400 single user license (some functions
limited) that will allow you various things, including 5250 emulation. It
uses the Java Toolkit, is fully java based and runs on all java enabled
platforms. I run it under Windows9x and NT (with the JRE1.3 that comes with
Information Center) as well as under RedHat Linux with Sun's JDK 1.3, and it
runs pretty well. If you go for the LARGE download at Linoma, the JRE is
included in the download (surveyor_2731.bin).

Keep in mind this is not just a TN5250 implementation; it installs a LICPGM
on the AS/400 as well, so it's not something an end-user can simply
implement. Linoma does the TN5250 seperately as well, but that one's still
in beta, and expires after 30 days. It works fine, though, but I see no
reasons to pay for it in its current form.

Mochasoft (www.mochasoft.dk) also does a tn5250 emulator for Linux. I've
tested that one as well and it works OK. It's a very small download, only
56KB.

Finally, I've also tested the open source tn5250 (tn5250-0.16.1-2.i386.rpm)
and found no problems with that either. It's about double the size of the
Mocha download.

Problem with _all_ non-CA tn5250 implementations is that 27x132 mode is
virtually useless unless you run the emulator full screen. There's no window
resizing like in CA, rendering the 132 colums displays unreadable.
