I know that the HP38G cable (which looks just like the HP200LX cable)
is compatible via the adapter. And I am pretty sure the HP38G cable is
not the same as the HP200LX cable.
Here's a link to Joe Horn's cable table: http://www.holyjoe.org/hp/cable.htm
The HP38G and HP49G have the same pinouts (see F1897-66000 cable). Joe
Horn's table shows that the HP200LX cable can fry HP49G calculators.
So there you have it -- not compatible.
Hmm, I knew there were some extra video output lines on the 49G port
that can fry the thing if you hook them up to serial control lines
with a 200LX cable, but I was under the (possibly mistaken) impression
that the 4 basic serial lines were mapped the same on both the 49G and
200LX ports. However, these two links seem to suggest that the pinouts
differ significantly in that regard, meaning I would indeed need a
different adapter for the 200LX cable:

Thanks for the link; hopefully I can dig up the right combination of
cable + adapter that will work on both my 200LX and my various 48s.
