Can someone here come up with a plausible scenario in which bad results
from the HP35s's cosine and tangent bugs would result in death or some
other massive failure?

Well, suppose there's a guy with a gun, demanding to know sin(0.01)
with 12-digit precision.

Well,suppose you're inside a B2 or an YF-23,and you rip off all fly-by-
wire hardware to replace it with many 35s...that would do it

Suppose the system designer used an HP-35s when calibrating the fly-by-
wire....

I once mistook a comma for a decimal point FORTRAN DO loop
and forced the destruction of a missile that would've hit Phoenix, AZ
due to my error.

DO 100 J = 1, 7
means a totally different thing than

DO 100 J=1.7

The first example sets up a counter from 1 to 7.

The second example sets the variable DO100J equal to 1.7
(FORTRAN ignores embedded spaces)

I finally got sick of the big list of bugs and misfeatures of the hp35s
that I picked up a used hp32sII. What would it take to convince
Hewlett-Packard to produce, say, an hp35sII that fixes all these
problems?

The Hp 32sii is of a much better build quality and is also much more
compact. I would prefer it over the more power Hp35s nearly every
time. If I wanted a more powerful (and I normally do) powerful
calculator than the Hp 32sii, I would use my Hp 48G over the Hp 35s as
it is only slightly larger than the bulky Hp35s and can be bought used
in very good condition, has the build quality of an Hp ie near
identical quality to your Hp 32sii, and doesn't have the limitations
of the Hp 35s flaws.

The Hp 48G flaws are that it is bulky (but not much bulkier than an Hp
35s), and is slow (in comparision to an Hp 50G).

If you need to take an NCEES exam, consider the Hp 33s, I actually
like it better than an Hp 35s for normal use ie actually better
keyboard layout (aside from the tacky Chevron look) and closer to the
size of the Hp 32sii.

All your error issues are minor or irrelevant in the normal world of
engineering where you only have 3-4 digits of precision. If the
errors of the calculator were larger, Hp would HAVE to correct them
due to irresponsible manufacturing. As it is, it is mearly anothere
one of many stains to their once reputable name in the calculator
business.
