I wanted to backup come Grading Data as well as some
Programs that I use for the Physics and Astronomy classes I teach.
I have used HP 50g, 49g+ and 48gii Calculator PC Connectivity Kit
versions 2.3 Build 2438 and 2439 (1 Sep 2006).
Neither versions work and the calculator is not recognized.
Any way to get these programs working correctly.

If a student told you that an experiment
"didn't work," what would be your first response?

> Any way to get these programs working correctly?

And if they said "hey Mr. lab instructor,
any way to get these experiments working correctly?"
what discourse would you pursue with them?

What about this (32-bit) version of Conn4x?
<http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=5890>

This reports "version 2.3 build 2439" [2009] after installation
(not 2.2.2439 as shown on www.hpcalc.org)

Where does your version come from,
and on what OS (32/64) are you installing?

At what point did you install the required USB driver?

If Conn4x does not show either "USB Calculator" or "HPx9G+" in "Connect using,"
while the calculator is plugged in and turned on,
then the USB driver has not been installed.

If the "help" which comes with the software
says anything about installing the driver,
I'm failing to find it, but it's a standard Windows procedure,
which can be [re]launched from Device Manager (devmgmt.msc),
and the 32-bit driver comes in the USBDriver folder
which is installed with the Conn4x program files.

If you have a 64-bit OS, then you need a 64-bit driver;
perhaps TW can remind us where to find one, if there is one.

It turns out that he once did:
<http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp48/msg/1b3a360aa47348b3>

And the universal driver package for HP 50g, 49g+, 48gII, 39g+, 39gs, and 40gs,
supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7,
is at <http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=7168>
<http://www.hpcalc.org/hp49/pc/link/hpcalculatorusbsetup.exe> Direct download

This hadn't shown up in my original search
for the connectivity kit at www.hpcalc.org;
perhaps it should be mentioned in the connectivity kit writeup,
as it has become an essential companion to that original kit.

I am running Windows XP MCE with all updates up to and including SP3 +
all the latest fixes.
I first installed version 2.3 build 2439 that I downloaded from
Eric's site.
It did not work with any of my calculators( HP50G; four of them) I did
get the USB beeps when I plugged them in and out and when the
calculators turned off automatically.
It tried to connect with HPX9G+. No luck. I tried to connect with
Auto, again no luck.The icon has a question mark after it.
I uninstalled version 2.3 build 2439 and then installed version 2.3
build 2438 that I got from the Educalc web page.
It did not work.
I uninstalled it. I went to the devise manager and deleted the diver.
I then installed the separate USB drivers and get the USB beeps. I
then re installed 2439.
It still does not recognize any of my calculators.
I tried the direct download of the USB drivers and get the USB beeps,
but the software still does not recognize any of my calculators.

My recomendation to you is USE A SD CARD you can copy data to it and
transfer to PC or keep on it. Use one up to 2GB.

Install the connectivity kit (any recent version). Then run the
standalone USB installer, either from hpcalc.org or from HP directly
(http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/
SoftwareDescription.jsp?
lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=215348&prodSeriesId=3235173&prodNameId=3235174&swEnvOID=4063&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ca-78265-1).

Then plug in the calculator and it should work.

However, the easiest way to do any transfer will always be the SD
card.

32-bit or 64-bit Windows?

If you have directories called "Program files (x86)"
into which 32-bit programs are installed by default,
then you have 64-bit Windows, and always need 64-bit device drivers.

Plugging in USB devices always causes Windows to beep;
this does not indicate anything useful.

> It tried to connect with HPX9G+. No luck.

What would you grade a lab report which said
"I tried to do the experiment -- no luck"?

Is that all the kind of reporting of lab results
which even students are trained to do?

> I tried to connect with Auto, again no luck
> The icon has a question mark after it.

WHAT ICON?

If the calculator device icon in Windows' Device Manager (devmgmt.msc)
has a yellow question mark, then _the driver is not installed and functional_,
which is likely if the only versions that you attempted to install
were the 32-bit versions accompanying the original software,
while you may be running a 64-bit version of Windows,
which can not use the 32-bit drivers.

Please install the separate drivers, as TW has just explained.

His URL managed to overwhelm my news client, but you can still use

<http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=7168>
or
<http://www.hpcalc.org/hp49/pc/link/hpcalculatorusbsetup.exe>

Hi!, Harold:
Is better option use SD (Secure Digital) <= 2Gb.
Is use SD <= 1Gb., you can FORMAT SD from HP50G (ON+F4), option
9.CARD, 2.FORMAT
Is you have SD > 1Gb. and = 2Gb., you must use FORMAT from PC, Netbook
or NoteBook. IMHO the best software for this action is ...
SDFORMATTER, what you can download from ...
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html

Note: For update ROM from SD or CONNX4, you can see ...
http://www.educalc.net/1861088.page

Best Regards.
MACH.
