Hello, I have an HP50G, HP49G and HP48G and I'm thinking of buying HP Prime ... do you think it's a good buy? It works fine in RPN mode? is the programming language the same? And to convert units is easy as in HP50G. You can make soft menus like the HP50G.
Thank you

- No, Prime's RPN is limited and crippled compared to the 50g's RPN.
- No, Prime's programming language (HP PPL) is totally different (not stack-oriented like RPL). It's more like Pascal.
- No, converting units on the Prime requires far more keystrokes and in general is annoying (this might improve in a future firmware upgrade).
- No, you can't easily program soft menus on Prime like the 50g can.

The Prime is awesome for its speed (it runs similar user-code programs roughly 200 times faster than the 50g) but it requires you to totally rewrite all your programs from scratch. Most of the 50g's features for user customizability are not available on the Prime. But the Prime has a programmable touch screen, and its screen is full color, and much higher resolution than the 50g's screen, which is cool. And its built-in apps are useful. But in general, do NOT think of the HP Prime as an improved 50g, because that's not at all what it was intended to be. It's a whole 'nuther tool, optimized for math education.

Disclaimer: The above was my opinion when I wrote it, but it might no longer be my opinion by time you read it. I do not work for HP; I'm just another happy HP calculator user.

Hello all,

it's just like Joe worte... I would like to add:
there is very little base for comparison HP50 vs HP Prime,
Prime is targeted for entirely different market segment,
long story short...
if you're used to HP50 and the way and how it works in general,
then you should stick to it.
HP Prime is not intended as a replacement for 50G.

From the fact that you have several other HP calculators
I understand you may want to buy Prime to have and play/try
the most recent model too.

I think the price is right for what it does...

There's really nothing to add other than to pine. I bought 2 HP50g calculators, so I'll hopefully never be without. I think we all wish HP would continue the line.

That said, from an RPN point of view, the Prime is woefully lacking. I didn't realize just how much I use list processing in the stack until I bought the Prime. The Prime is fun, but it is not what I really need.

Premise.
I am a very long term user of RPL calculators since 1989.
I used 28s, 48sx, 48gx and 50g.
Currently I put my 50g aside and am using again the 48gx.
I use the calculator for may daily work (chemical engineering).

I tried the Prime only as emulator and found it pretty useless for
my work: it is clearly aimed to students and IMHO is not suitable
for engineering work.
The 50g and much more the 48 series is aimed to professional users.

Best regards

Just another note:

Remembering the days when I switched from 48SX to 49G+
I was one of them complaining about the enter key being the wrong size
and in the wrong place, inferior materials and build quality whole bunch
of stuff realy...

BUT HONESTLY

-the display (quality/contrast, color and size)
-stack, fonts,
-(new) keys 50G has very decent keys nowdays
-amount of memory (plus SD cards expansion)
-very fast Saturn(+) emulator with ability to execute native ARM code
-Connectivity: (USB,Serial,IrDA)

just can't be beat, there are TI's Casio's and what not...
all very nice but, not the way I'd expect.

Obviously on 50G some things are different from older 48 series but it's
all in there, also bacward compatible to a reasonable level.

Over time I got used to new 49G+/50G.
These days, when I pull the old SX from the drawer, I look at it
...and... just put it back in.

I like it (respect) for what it was, but 50G is the calculator standard
for me now.
HP Prime is hardware-wize superior and very well built, but only with
true 50G (Saturn+) emulator it will tend to replace the 50G

Writing and reviewing all this I firmly belive that HP Prime should be
considered as a PLATFORM and there should be at least 2 firmwares/OS-es
1. the Saturn emulator IE even more advanced 50G
2. the current HP Prime OS
==============
other possible applications:
3. HTML/node.js Chrome OS like OS
4. instruments (builtin) and instrument controllers (memory and loging
features)
5. IOT and network based things
and many more...

Looking for application in practice, to make it usefull every day and
everywhere should be the goal, rather than reinventing the thing
(calculator) over and over again...

Hello,

I have both , the prime is very fast , well built and have a color touchscreen, but i prefer my trusty 50G , RPN and RPL are far more flexible than the PPL and the algebraic mode .

For a student hp prime is a must, supplier to master than the 50G , but for a pro (engineer , navigator, surveyor ... ) the 50G is tailor made for them.
