However, when I choose the "auto" setting on conn4x, and attempt to
connect I recieve the connection failure message instructing me to
check my calbe and calculator.
Any ideas on what else I can try?
I thought I had read on this board a couple months ago about some
people that had a problem with their 49s that prevented them from
connecting. They had to send the calculator in for repair. Is that
true?
The Sunburned Surveyor
Sunburned... In the "Connect Using"...you do not want "Auto", you need
to select the "HPx9G+" option.
I personally recomend using a SD card reader to transfer files.
Call me when you have some time.

Did the wizard complete, and did you install the driver?

Why choose "Auto"?
If the 49G+ is powered on and has been connected at all,
even if Xmodem Server (XSERV) is not yet running,
Conn4x should show the HPx9G+ option, choosing which
will let Conn4x skip first trying the COM ports.
Are you sure that the Kinpo USB driver has been successfully installed?
In Windows Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers,
an entry for HPx9G+ device should appear when calc is connected;
its Properties should show that the device is working, and that
its driver was provided by KinpoSH, version 1.2.0.0 or later
(the driver installs with hpconnectivitykit.zip from HP;
try reinstalling that if driver isn't yet installed).
Without the driver and device first working, Conn4x can't connect.

o Always first select HP9xG+ in Conn4x [Connect using:]
(if not shown, reconnect calc to cable with power on).
o Always start calc xmodem server first
(Rshift right-arrow or XSERV command)
before asking Conn4x to connect.
o Always disconnect via Conn4x first
(via tool button or File > Disconnect)
instead of interrupting XSERV on calc.

"Auto" means try them all, 1 at a time. Since HPx9G+ option is the last
one, Conn4x is going to try all your serial ports first.
This might work but often a given port may have something connected (like a
modem) and things won't work too well. Even if it works, it takes a while
before each port "times out" and Conn4x goes to the next one.
Select HPx9G+ to work a whole lot better.
BUT HPx9G+ will not show in the list box unless the calculator is ON and the
usb cable is connected.
XModem Server does not have to be running for HPx9G+ to show, but it will
have to be running to connect!

The grave thing is that
there is no option to make the HPx9G+ as the first selection

Actually, there is. Conn4x accepts the command line argument "HPx9G+"
which will cause the program to start searching for the HPx9G+ port
first. Just make your shortcut target:
"C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Conn4x\Conn4x.exe" HPx9G+
It will try to connect right away, so make sure xmodem is already
running. See "command line" in the Conn4x Help Index for details.
Say, does the 'x' in HPx9G+ mean that the next model will be the
HP59G+?

Or does it mean that the HP39G+ uses the same USB stuff?
