However, whenever I plug the cable into the '49, I get harsh vertical
lines, and the calculator resets. This happens both when the cable is
plugged into the computer, or whether it is disconnected. It is an ID93
calc. The 49-to-49 cable that comes with the calc works fine when used from
49 to 48.
Has anyone got any suggestions that could help me? Is it likely to be a
problem with the cable? Are the older cables differently wired to the new
ones?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me,
David Drew

PC cables with the 10-pin connector molded-in
(not slipped on over a 4-pin connector)
are NO GOOD for the HP49 (or HP38):

If you keep on trying, your calc may soon be all washed up ;)

This hp48 cable it's not good for hp49.
Look at my signature below to learn how building an inexpensive converter
from that cable to your hp49.

Joe Horn informed me that HP is now confusing matters
by making the latest HP49 cables exactly this same way,
but of course with no connections to six of the ten connector
pins which are meant for piping the LCD to an overhead projector;
therefore, be sure to X-ray any unknown cable before use,
as outward appearances are now fading as useful clues.
BTW, the calc-to-calc cable which comes with an HP49
comes with just one slip-on adapter to make one end fit an HP48.
If I had a second adapter, then that short cable would be
equally handy for connecting one HP48 with another HP48.
But does the HP48 adapter from an old HP95LX/Omni 10-pin cable
fit over the 10-pin end of a new cable? No, of course not;
HP only made things fit where it would destroy a calc,
not where everything would work just fine ;)
Wasn't anyone listening to Dave?
[maybe they misinterpreted his continual mention of "spigot" :]
Now wouldn't that rule ! Anyone up to making us some ?
