I apologize for posting this in this group, but I can't find a TI group
worth a hill of beans, and you guys seem to be well versed in TIs and
HPs. I'm planning on getting either a TI89 Titanium or a Voyage200 to
replace my HP48gx. Replace is probably the wrong word. I would love to
keep it, but as the TIs have become the standard in the academic world,
it is a lot easier to get help on a TI. Back to the question. Is the
Voyage worth the extra money (about $90 it seems)? How often will I use
the qwerty keyboard? I'm majoring in mechanical engineering to give you
an idea of what i will be doing.

Hi,

For my sins, I have a TI-92+ which is a really good bit of kit. A little
on the large size and I cannot use it in exams, etc, due to the qwerty
KB, but I still quite like it. Actually, it's HUUUGE, but is OK. :-)

I would suggest that if you insist on switching to the Dark SIde(tm)
then you should go for the TI-89 rather than the Voyage, as it's more
standard form factor makes it a bit less embarrassing to use and it's
certainly a more sensible size than the Voyage.

Just my £0.02. :-)

As posted, you generally can't use a calculator with a QWERTY keyboard in
exams, so go for a more normal one.
Personally I like my HP49g+, except for two keys which insist on being
pressed at least twice.

Well, I got a V200 and I often use the keyboard. One of the good
things about the keyboard is that if you have got a task, then it's
very easy to write a small program that solves it fast. I know a lot
of TI89 users, and they seldom or never write math programs on their
calculators. So im my experience the extra money has been well spent.

Here's one:

Haven't they always been?

If you're in the US:

TI-89T: $129.99
V200: $179.95

Well, obviously you would be able to type significantly faster than
with a vertical layout. The V200 also has a larger screen. You can fit
the TI-89T into a trouser pocket (although the V200 fits in some large
pockets). They have almost identical software. I would recommend
trying them out for yourself to see which one you're comfortable with.
I would probably go for a V200, because fast typing and the larger
screen are important to me, but the extra $50 may make a large
difference to you.

Hope this helps somewhat,
Bhuvanesh.

The TI92+ was big. But the voyage 200 is not much bigger than a TI89 -
less than 30% larger I guess.

If the decision is between the Voyage and the TI-89 Titanium, all you
have to think about is the keyboard and the screen size. The TI-89 is
160x100 and the Voyage is 240x128. The software should be nearly
identical. I know the Voyage owners get 2 programs for free from TI
that everyone else has to pay for but I think Titanium owners also get
these too.

Go for the 89.

If the two calculators were the exact same price, I would say to consider
the V200, but as long as the 89Ti is less expensive, by all means choose it.
You already know that the functionality is the same. And, I've never had a
problem with the screen size on the 89. I don't find it particularly
inconvenient to write programs without the QUERTY keyboard, and despite what
a pervious poster has said, I have written many programs relevant to my
course work over the years. You just don't get enough benefit to justify
any cost permium.

I do believe that more programs are available for download from the Internet
(from 3rd party sources) for the 89 than the V200.

Granted, the BASIC programs should be more-or-less identical unless they
happen to take advantage of the full screen size of the V200... but, the
file extension for V200 files is different, and I've never been inclined to
test them by changing the extension to allow TIConnect to send them to the
89 instead.

I would think that any ASM files that directly work with hardware I/O will
have problems being run on any machine other than their intended target
because of the larger screen, etc. Math libraries written in ASM might be
portable; I've only ever tried ones that were specifically written for the
89.

I've used a 92 Plus before, and I have to say, I spent more time looking for
the placement of the keys I needed than I spent *completing* most operations
on the 89. (Granted, I was already comfortable with the 89's key layout at
the time.)

(It's sad, really, I'm so used to the TI/HP49 key layout, that now when I go
back to dust off my old HP 48G+, I usually hit the [+] key several times in
error before I realize that the Enter key isn't there.)

You don't need to. In the DeviceExplorer, drag-and-drop the file into
a folder or the calculator icon.

Hmm, interesting.

Anyone want to buy a lightly-used TI-92+? :-) I might have to get a
Voyage to replace it.
