Hi,
I am trying to emulate my SMI Survey card on EMU48. I uploaded the
card using cardupl and converted it to EMU format using ROM2EMU. I
tried two things:

1. Cardcopy. I cardcopy the file to the E.48 file. The emulator
does not seem to see it.
2. Add the .emu file as port 2. This seems to hang the emulator. It
displays a flashing asterisk but does nothing else useful.

I am absolutely sure the card works (I use it in my HP48 all the
time).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Hi,

is your Emu48 set to the same HP-48
type as your real HP-48 (SX or GX)?

Is it a port dependent card?

Ray

Hi Raymond,
Thank you for the prompt reply. Yes, EMU48 is set to the same
version as my calculator. Both have ROM version R. The SMI manual is
clear that the card should be installed in Port 1. I have not tried
it in Port 2 (in the calculator that is).

Thank you!
Bob

The card copying programs may not know about the internals of the
card. There are some fairly basic schemes to break any card copying
program via hardware. The HP48GX only supports 128KB cards in Port 1,
but the card itself may be larger than that (256KB or even 512KB) with
the programs written in the memory bank that would normally get
detected as the first bank (i.e Port 1 on the calculator). The other
banks can then be used to store things like initialization programs or
other forms of copy protection. During the bootup process (when you
press [ON] and [C]) the calculator can easily be programmed to remap
the card and read from higher banks to ensure that you have a genuine
card. I know that TDS has in the past required that the cards first be
inserted into Port 2, and then back into Port 1 to "install" the
programs. This is essentially the same process as aforementioned, only
requiring manual swapping of the cards. Other schemes include adding
extra chips onto the card (and again temporarily remapping the memory
banks) as a means of ensuring you're running from an actual card and
not just a copy.

Hello Bob,

Which SMI Survey Card are you using? I used to have the DCE
card version 7 but I sold it to my friend. I still have the
SMI User's Guides for versions 5 and 6 because I wrote some
good notes in them on how to use the software. My favorite
function was XPLOT because I used it to restake slopes on
existing retention ponds because they were too steep and people
were fearful that some little kid might drown.

I think in 2001 I was working in the office when I discovered
the Emu48 and I thought about how great it would be to have
it loaded with SMI software and available on the desktop to
copy and paste output into CAD. I called SMI and they had such
a thing but I didn't buy it. Anyway, are you looking to do that or
is your 48 falling apart?

Regards,

Mark
