These are pretty frequently asked questions, so naturally they are
in the comp.sys.hp48 FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). You can get
your very own copy from:

This IS a FAQ question. Type the command VERSION into your G or GX.
The current ROM revision is R, which gives the message:
"Version HP48-R"
"Copyright HP 1993"
Those with S-series machines, or who intend to post to the group,
should refer to the oft-posted FAQ for information on this and
other topics. The FAQ for this group is an excellent document
which is kept up-to-date and reposted regularly. (I think it's
monthly.) A clear indication of the quality of this FAQ is that
it quotes me. (That was intended to make you smile. I am really
a humble fellow, except when I'm not. And then it's justified.)
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions; it is a document for
reducing the number of times the same question gets asked again
and again and again. And then some. Many newsgroups have them,
though I understand the FAQ for rec.humor.puns is now too large to
be posted on most systems. :} People who are new to a newsgroup
should fight the urge to post until they have read the group for a
few weeks, and read the FAQ. It works in theory.
(The problem comes when people post FAQs KNOWING they are FAQs!
Check the title on the message to which I am replying. It's only
gonna get worse, folks!)

>them?
No. The firmware is not upgradeable. During development, I had the
production line make up a few dozen units which were upgradeable
using a special ROM chip and some significant hardware mods. But a
production calculator is not designed to be repaired, modified, or
upgraded. (We also do our design work with ink pens, not pencils,
because we never make misrakes. :p )
>- Does HP plan to make a new and more advanced calculator and are they
>doing it already?
We plan, we scheme, we work, and we dream. But most folks outside HP
(and even some inside) will not know the details until the official
product announcement, which is usually about the same time as when
the product is ready to manufacture in quantity. We could be working
on a calculator, a dishwasher, a new-and-improved pasta, or an
exercise video. You will simply have to wait and see.
As to whether we are "doing it already," I thought that question
was reserved for Michael Jackson and his alleged wife.
Dave
I have to sign off now. We're testing a graphite-composite-fiber
reinforced lycra fabric which we'll use for the warm-up clothing in
our next ...project.

I don't speak for HP when I post here, thank goodness!
I have some questions for you guys to answer if possible :
- Is it possible to know the ROM version of my HP48GX?
- If so, is also possible to upgrade ROM versions? Where can I find
them?
- Does HP plan to make a new and more advanced calculator and are they
doing it already?
- Could someone give me comparisons between the TI92(new) and HP48GX ?
I have a friend undecided on what calculator to buy...
Well, those questions may sound a little silly, but I´m still curious
about them....
Thanks guys.

>- Is it possible to know the ROM version of my HP48GX?
Yes. VERSION.
>- If so, is also possible to upgrade ROM versions? Where can I find

Educalc carries them for $200.. maybe your local store is less.
>- Does HP plan to make a new and more advanced calculator and are they

unknown, unknown
>- Could someone give me comparisons between the TI92(new) and HP48GX ?
>I have a friend undecided on what calculator to buy...
It depends to a large part what your friend wants. If he wants vapor, then Ti92
is fine. It isn't due out for more than a year. GX is quite nice. It exists. You
can use it on SAT, whereas TI92 will be banned (qwerty keyboard)
I think the choice is clear. :)

Yes : type version in the stack and it returns the version of your
ROM.

Normally , no .
>- Does HP plan to make a new and more advanced calculator and are they

I hope so ...

>I have a friend undecided on what calculator to buy...
If your friend is not interested in programming its calculator I think
that Ti92 is a good choice ( main problem is that Ti92 has only 70Ko
of RAM ) .

This command doesn't work for the HP48SX... What should I use?

An easy way to find the ROM version for *any* HP48 is to use the
VERSTRING System-RPL object, at address #30794h. Type this on our HP48:
#30794h SYSEVAL
The last letter in the string that you see on the stack is the ROM
version of your machine. VERSTRING is a supported ROM entry point, so
this technique will work on any HP48. Read the FAQ for another technique
to find the ROM version of an S/SX using the memory scanner. Heck, read
the FAQ anyway.

prehaps the following information that i received with my 48sx many jears ago
helps.
HP 2/90 wrote:
"Detemining the Firmware Revision Level of Your HP 48SX
(Note the following keystroke sequence willclear any data you have on the
stack.
)
1. Press "on" to turn your calculator on.
2. Simultaneously press "on" and the D key (the fourth white key from the
left at the
top of the keyboard).
3. Press the backspace key (fifth row, last column).
4. Hold down the "EVAL" key.
A message will appear in your display. The first line of the message will read
"Version HP48-"
followed by the revision letter for your calculator.
To return the calculator to its normal state, simutaneously press "on" and the
"C" key (third
key first row)."
I hope this helps with your problem.

Unfortunately this is not true, the ir comm. port on most any of the HP
calc's make them against the rules for sat, act and other acedemic tests.
