I am having a problem with my zt1145, well actually two problems. Of
course, the computer is out of warranty.

Problem #1 centers around the fact that I have been using this computer as
it was designed to be, as a portable computer. I should also say that my
wife's computer, purchased the same week, has no problems. Here's the
problem...

Due to inserting and removing the power adapter, the connector on the
computer's motherboard has come partially disconnected, at least on one leg
of the power input. The result is that when the power disconnects, the
screen goes battery mode, and dims slightly to conserve power. Then it may
flicker back to normal brightness with or without me fiddling with the
connector on the back of the computer. This is annoying, to say the least.

Well, with great difficulty due to a lack of ORIGINAL sales receipt to prove
date of purchase, (another story, if you want to here it), I convinced our
"friends" at HP to fix my computer. Left on Friday morning and I had it
back by the next Wednesday. INDREDIBLE! I know.

Well, five weeks pass, and a new problem crops up. The monitor begins going
black. I call our "friends" at HP and I am told the warranty had expired
the previous week. I tried to explain that I felt the problem was related to
the previous problem and it should be repaired ... no dice. FOR $700 they
would replace the top of the computer. ARGHHHHH!

So anyway, I figure that since it is out of warranty, I might as well try to
to diagnose the problem. The screen goes black. But if I looked at it at a
sharp angle, I could see that the image was there. I know that the monitor
is backlit with a fluorescent light. I can get a perfect image on both the
VGA output to a CRT and the s-video to a TV. I dive into the case with
trepidation.

The monitor was made by Philips, but are offshore so I call an OEM reseller.
I was told that the backlight was OK, because it did come on and evenly
light the screen. Look at a bulb that is going bad in your office to get
the idea of a bad fluorescent bulb. Also, he said that since there were no
missing pixels or sections of the screen, the screen itself was OK.

I checked the electrical connections, reassembled the computer ... same
problem. (DON'T FORGET THE $700). I called HP and they dropped the price to
repair to $350.

Back inside the computer. There is a small board between the motherboard
and screen. One power lead in and one out. Easily disconnected, so I
removed it. I researched it and found that the board was an Inverter.

A quick search of the web turned up several providers for the part. Wonder
of wonders, it was also sold by our "friends" at HP. Get this .....

F3379-60925 ... Inverter PCA - For 15.0-inch LCD display ... $28.00. I
sucked up my pride and bought the board from HP.

For $28.00 retail. HP lost my business FOREVER. Shame on their technical
support department.

I know this post is geting long, but now I need help with the motherboard.
Yes ... original problem again. Power connector.

Who makes the motherboard for the zt1145? And, does anyone have a work
around or modification I can make to stop this from happening again?
