No offense, but what you report there is nothing special and has very
little to do with HP, but with Vista or/and Microsoft.

The only point I don't understand is:

*Why* can't you delete the old imported messages from OE6? What
happens - i.e. which error - when you try to delete them?

Perhaps you just have some permission problem on the folders
containing the messages. If so, it might help to create new folders with
slightly different names, move the old messages to the new folders and
then try to remove some messages from the new folders. If that succeeds,
you can remove the old folders (perhaps with 'Run as administrator') and
rename the new ones.

FWIW, I have an HP Pavilion dv6570[ed] laptop (with Vista Home Premium
Edition) and the only 'problems' I had were because Vista is *different*
than XP. And yes, Vista is way too big. Feel free to [bf]lame Microsoft.

After I uninstalled programs I didn't want from mine (another model)
I found that some of the HP updates had trouble running their Javascript
parts since initially Java wasn't even installed, and later apparantly
because the Javascript parts of these updates wouldn't run under the
Sun version of Java and the Microsoft version of Java was no longer
available.

Also, I found that the trial version of a Norton antivirus program that
came with mine causes problems in running Windows Mail, and that
other versions of the Norton antivirus program have been known to
cause such problems about as long as Vista has been available.
Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program and a recent version
of the Trend antivirus program are also known to cause problems in
running Windows Mail. These problems seldom show up immediately,
so a few days of testing for them isn't likely to show anything; they
typically take months to show up, but my problems caused by the trial
version of the Norton antivirus program started showing up before the
free trial ran out.

Also, for these three programs, just disabling part or all of the programs
seldom helps; you usually have to uninstall them instead. For the Norton
and McAfee programs, the uninstall programs leave enough behind that
you usually then have to run a cleanup program:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If you want an antivirus program that doesn't cause such problems, I
recommend either avast! or AVG, but with a custom install where you
tell it to leave out the parts that scan email:

Apparantly, you haven't found the hotfix to help you with undeletable
messages under Windows Mail:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for messages stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders.

Note that these stuck messages are usually due to interference from an
antivirus program - usually one from either Norton or McAfee.

For more help with Windows Mail, see newsgroup:

microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail

It's under Microsoft Communities. Make sure you don't use a working
return address there, since spammers often use return addresses from
newsgroups as addresses to send spam to.
