I posted this some time ago with no success. Perhaps there are now some
additional new forum participants? Worth a try.

My HP Laserjet 3 shows a paper jam error when I try to print something. No
sign of a paper jam - I examined it carefully. I checked the manual and on
page 7 - 14 it mentions a plastic counterweight. It is vertical, as it is
supposed to be. I cleaned the printer and blew out any dust.

I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

TIA

Contact HP for service? Replace it with a slightly less ancient printer
for not much?

I do not recall whether I responded to this previously but if not - If there is
no paper in the paper path (or one page has partially fed) the likely cause is
a worn feed roller (picks the paper out of the tray and into the paper path),
if this is worn and fails to feed the paper correctly the printer times out and
"assumes" a paper jam.
Isopropyl alcohol will give the roller extra life and replacements rollers, if
necessary, should be available.

Thanks.

I rashly assume this is the short roller that sits on the end of the
paper stock. Not very reachable. Any suggestions on how to clean this? Or
tell if it needs cleaning? I'll search the manual later, when I have more
time, for possible instructions.

Probably far more $$$ than it's worth.

It was a very reliable good printer for many decades. I'm hoping I can get
it going again cheaply. If not, then new printer selection time.

You might see how well, or 'not well', the paper pickup is working by
trying one sheet via the hand feed and lightly holding the sheet between
two fingers to see how 'forceful' the 'tug' of the paper pickup is.

If there's no tug at all, there is a 'solid jam' being (falsely?)
detected somewhere in the paper path.

The LJIII is a solid, long running work horse. I bought mine in July,
1990 for $1,872.50 for our home office. I have the cancelled check used
to pay for it laminated to the top cover -- just above the HP logo.
My only repair in 22 years is the replacement of the fuser assembly --
about 5 years ago --- which I did myself.

For several years around the turn of the century, I bought sealed, NOS
toner cartridges (cheaply) for it at second-hand stores as other folks
drank the koolaid of the inkjets and dumped their LJ's. I now have a
life-time supply stored in a dark, cool closet in the basement. I even
bought a (backup) LJ4 for $15 on one of those trips to a second-hand
store...

(I would assume you've found http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/
by now....)

Sorry, not familiar with that. Could you please describe?

Do you know how to hand feed one sheet at a time over the top of the
paper tray? Do it - lightly holding the sheet between two fingers to
see how 'forceful' the 'tug' of the paper pickup is.

I ordered this from the fixyourowprinter web site:

=================================================================
HP Laserjet II/III Pickup Jam Repair Kit

Problem: Paper doesn't get pulled out of the paper tray or stops short
of the registration roller (the registration roller is under the green
handle). Problem is more evident with heavier stock or envelopes.

Cause: The pickup roller is worn out from use. If you look at it, you
will notice the surface of it is shiny.

Solution: Replace the necessary parts, all of which are included in
this repair kit (along with easy to follow directions).

Kit Includes:

Pickup Roller (Non-OEM)
Separation Pad
Felt Pads
Rubber Roller Rejuvenator Pad
Instructional Video (CD-ROM or VHS)
=======================================================================

Hope it solves my problem.

Thanks for the lead to the web site. It hadn't turned up in my Google
searches concerning the problem.
