You might see how well, or 'not well', the paper pickup is working by
trying one sheet via the hand feed and lightly holding the sheet between
two fingers to see how 'forceful' the 'tug' of the paper pickup is.
If there's no tug at all, there is a 'solid jam' being (falsely?)
detected somewhere in the paper path.
The LJIII is a solid, long running work horse. I bought mine in July,
1990 for $1,872.50 for our home office. I have the cancelled check used
to pay for it laminated to the top cover -- just above the HP logo.
My only repair in 22 years is the replacement of the fuser assembly --
about 5 years ago --- which I did myself.
For several years around the turn of the century, I bought sealed, NOS
toner cartridges (cheaply) for it at second-hand stores as other folks
drank the koolaid of the inkjets and dumped their LJ's. I now have a
life-time supply stored in a dark, cool closet in the basement. I even
bought a (backup) LJ4 for $15 on one of those trips to a second-hand
store...
(I would assume you've found

by now....)
