Can anyone help me out on how to setup two internal hard drives on a HP
Pavillion 8580c? I'm thinking of adding a Western Digital 80GB hard drive
in addition to the one that came with my pc (20 GB). I've searched HP's
support site but I can only find articles on replacing a hard drive, not
adding one. According to the product specs of my pc, I have 2 Free drive
bays -- 1 combo & 1 internal 3.5-inch.

Thanks,

Assuming you want to keep your original drive as the master, all you need to
do is jumper select the new drive as 'slave' and install it on the other
connector of the hard drive cable. Bolt it into the chassis, plug in power,
and set it up in the BIOS.

And remember to format it or your operating system won't 'see' it.

Also make certain that the OEM drive is jumpered 'master'(MA), I believe that they come from the
factory as 'cable select' (CS)...luck...

If the system is set up as a cable select, why worry about the
jumpers? That is the purpose of the cable select settings.

If the drives are jumpered incorrectly, cable select will not funtion. I.E.,
if you set jumpers to master/slave and use a cable select cable, it will not
work. There are cable select pin settings on all ATA drives.

I suppose I should have phrased that more clearly. Someone posted that
the drive jumpers should be changed *from* cable select if that is
where they are set when adding a second drive. But if the jumper was
set to cable select then that would mean that cable select is
expected; as you state, changing the jumpers from cable select to
master/slave would break the installation.

I guess instead of trying to be flippant, I should simply have pointed
out: when adding a second drive, if the first drive is jumpered
"Master", jumper the second drive "Slave"; if the first drive is
jumpered "Cable Select", jumper the second drive "Cable Select".

No harm, no foul, my friend. I had no doubt that you knew what you were
talking about, but I re-iterated for the benefit of those less technically
inclined. Didn't mean to offend and apologize if I did.

The reason that I said it: I had a computer with one HDD. It was set to CS and I didn't change it
to MA when I added another HDD as SL. I just didn't work! Know why? Because the SL drive was
first on the cable due to space limitations within the case. CS will work, but only if set up
properly with the drive that you want to access first being set up first in the line...right? Maybe
it was just because it was an older machine...486 if memory serves, but could have been a first gen
Pentium, not sure...
