Georg,
This sounds like one of your cartridges is bad, or there is a pin
recessed in the carriage. To troubleshoot it, I would suggest the
following. (Some of which you may have already done)
1. Lift the lid and wait until the cartridges come to the center.
Close the lid and see if the cartridges slide back to their park
position or if they stay in the center. If they stay in the center,
lift the lid again and uplug the printer. Take out the cartridges,
close the lid, plug the printer in. After its done doing its thing,
lift the lid and install the cartridges. Close the lid and see what
happens. If you still get the same error then try number 2.
2. Get some foam swabs, and dampen them with water. Clean the back of
the cartridge, and the pins, that make contact with the cartridge, in
the carriage. Make sure that you do not apply an excessive amount of
pressure. Let it all dry and re-install the cartridges. If it still
does not work go to number 3.
3. Go to wherever you buy cartridges and get a new black cartridge and
a new color cartridge. Then start off by replacing the color
cartridge. After you replace it, close the lid and then see what
happens. If you get the same result, take that color cartridge out and
put your old one back in. Now try the black. If you still get the same
result, then you have a pin in the carriage, that is recessed, and its
not making contact with whatever cartridge it goes to. However, if
the printer starts working after you replace one of the cartridges,
then you need to call HP. HP has like a 30 day or 90 day warranty on
their cartridges. Tell them when you bought your older cartridge, and
tell them exactly what you have done to arrive at that conclusion.
They'll send you a new cartridge, for whichever one is bad, as long as
you are in the cartridges warranty period.
Hope this helps.
