What is the HP SS80/CS80 disk drive protocol? (HP 9122 drives)

Hi

I'm still using HP86 computers routinely for data logging and I need to
read the data written by these machines into my PC, running NT.

I have an HP 9122 drive successfully connected to my PC via a GPIB
interface and can copy files, in a restricted manner, from this using a
very crude 16 bit HP program called lif.exe, so disk access is no problem.

Can anyone give me any details of the protocol used by 9122 (or 9122c)
drives (SS80/CS80) - ie the bus commands and command strings I need to send
across the GPIB interface in order to access the disk drive?

All I really need to be able to do is to retrieve 256 byte physical records
from the disk. I already know how to extract the disk catalogue records
and data items from the "raw" records (I have a set of utilities I wrote
for reading the HP86 files into an HP300 computer).

Thanks

David Lee

i have here a book about CommandSet/80.
however why not using drive a: of Your PC for reading HP LIF disks ? it's
possible! 270KB 720KB and also HD 3.5" black.

we sell a program to read data files from Series 80 on MSDOS/ Win95.

ask for more.

ciao peter

Thanks for that. However I should have added that I'm using windows NT so
the a: drive route doesn't work (I already use HP's lifutil for which I
have to re-boot into MS-DOS). Since I already have a GPIB interface in my
machine and plenty of HP 9122 disk drives, copying from the HP drives is an
atractive option.

David,

wow! this is old stuff..... I was the manager for the team who developed
CS80. I'll look around and see there are any old documents that describe
the low level GPIB (we call it HP-IB back then) commands..... It's hard to
believe someone is still using these...

Well 13 years later, is anyone else paying with the CS80/SS80 protocols?

I've connected a HP 9127 5.25" FDD via an IOTech RS232 to GPIB convertor as I'm about to try a few SS80 commands.

Priorities are:
Reading a FAT dir.
Formatting in FAT
Reading files

Sure, see http://www.dalton.ax/hpdisk

Is there a doc anywhere that lists the differences between Amigo, SS/80 and CS/80?
