Here's my setup:

HP LaserJet P2015 with optional expansion tray (tray 3)
Print queue connected through TCP/IP port on Windows Server 2003
Using PostScript driver (HP LaserJet P2015 Series PS)

Device Settings tab
-Installable Options section
--Tray 3: Installed
-form To Tray Assignment section
--Printer Auto Select: Letter
--Manual Feed in Tray 1: Not available
--Tray 1: Not available
--Tray2: Letter
--Tray 3: Not available

Advanced tab, Printing Defaults
-Paper/Quality tab
--Size is: Letter
--Source is: Tray 2
--Type is: Unspecified (have tried plain and rough as well)

General tab, Printing Preferences
-Paper/Quality tab
--same settings as Printing Defaults above

==============

The printer WILL NOT print from tray 2 unless tray 3 is empty.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there an issue with this printer model
that simply won't allow specific tray selection? I have tried
selecting tray 1, 2 and 3 - it always prints from tray 3. I have tried
specifying that tray 3 is not installed, but it still prints from tray
3.

I have other print queues, for other models of HP printers, going to
specific trays and they all work without a problem. This one is just
frustrating me to no end.

Please help......

The P2015 defaults to always using tray 3, unless a size of paper or a
different paper type is specified in the print job.

What size of paper do you have in tray 2 and tray 3? Are they both letter
size?

The P2015 does not have sensors to detect the size of paper in the trays.
If you have something besides letter, you will have to go in through the
embedded Web server and configure it. In fact, it would be worth your while
to print a configuration page to check. Hold down the Go button for 8
seconds or more, which should print out a configuration page. Do the results
match what is actually in the trays?

Your print driver should be configured with tray 3 as installed, with the
correct paper size set for both tray 2 and tray 3.

I downloaded the latest drivers from HP. I have tried PostScript, PCL5
and PCL6. I have tried setting tray 3 as available and not available.
I have tried setting trays 1, 2 and 3 to letter size paper. I have
tried setting tray 1 and 3 to unavailable. I have specified plain
letter for all three trays in the web interface. I have spent far too
many hours on this and I still cannot get my print jobs to go to tray
2. I do the same thing with some old HP LaserJet 1320's so I know it
works, and I'm perfectly capable of setting things correctly. But this
damn P2015dn just won't cooperate.

I'm very close to telling the project team to purchase some more
1320's and to throw out these brand new P2015's. So any other
suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I cost the project,
and my department more money.

It turns out that the application I was using to print had
configuration settings for printing to a specific tray. They were set
to default, but I had to specify a tray number. There is also a tray
mapping utility on the server that creates a printer control file
specific to this application. The utility was generating an error, but
with some help, we were able to manually create a control file. Things
are finally working. The application tray mapping settings, and the
printer control files are not required for all models of all printers
for this application. But apparently they are required for this
specific model.

Fun fun!
