As of right now what is the most powerful calculator without any add ons. Is
it the 48GX... I'm planning on getting a good calculator...Is there going to
a better calculator than the 48GX from Hewlett Packard or anyone else?
I don't know if i should get the 48GX, if there is going to be something
better. So please help me, if you know any info. on future calcs. from
Hewlett Packard or anyone else.

Depends on your definitions of "powerful" and "calculator", I suppose.
An HP-100lx with Derive is more powerful than a 48gx in some ways,
maybe less in others. It might not be a calculator, though it
probably qualifies as a handheld.

If you are willing to dispense with hand-holdability, you can
get a notebook or subnotebook computer with e.g. Mathematica or
Mathcad. These will blow away any handheld device.

As far as I know, the most powerful calculator is the HP 48 GX. However, if
you are uninterested in add-ons, the 48 G is functionally identical, and costs
much less. There is one minor catch, the 48 G only has 32 k of RAM, whereas
the GX has 128 k.

As far as future calculators, anyone who knows anything works for HP or someone
else, and is not likely to say anything. I can only speculate that the 48 GX
will be the top of the heap for several more years. I base this speculation
on the fact that the 48 SX, (the GX's predecessor) was the top dog for about
4 years. The GX has only been around for about a year and a half.

If you would like to tell me more about what you intend to use the machine for
I might could give you some advice about whether the GX is right for you.

Good Luck,

Hello Countach:
The answer to your question about something better is of course.
There will always be progress unless the government nationalizes this
industy also. So go for it now, we may be close to that period where we
may be entering a new dark age where no progress will be made because of
govenment interference.
If anyone makes a mistake in a calculation the calculator
manufacturer may be held responsible and sued in the future. This may also
cause a slowdown in product development. So you better get one now.

According to rumors I have heard from people with HP, the G/X may be the
last true calculator that Hp will make. Appearantly Hp is tryying to
keep it's printer market and expand them, and expand there workstation and
PC market. Please take these with a grain of salt as they are not
official public HP statements.
