I connected a C64c to a 486 running 64HDD. Didn't work using a Pentium, but
this works fine. Cable used is a XE1541.
All works fine, games load great, missing lots of sleep etc, but there's one
problem: two of my favourite games don't work.
Maniac Mansion is the first. When I load the contents of the D64 image and
list it, all I get is the header, no files. Same for the second disk.
Stubbornly typing LOAD "MANIAC MANSION",8,1 doesn't help, it replies that
it's not there.
Zak McKracken is number two. Doing a dirlist of the D64 works fine, it gives
the same result as actually loading the authentic disks would.
Problem is that, after the Eagle Soft intro, all I get is some coloured
pixels. Try again, and I get a black screen with a green border.
Disk images were downloaded from Arnold and C64.com, and work fine on CCS64.
Other games (including multi-disk games) work fine.
Anybody any ideas?
Thanks,
Marc

They use fastloaders and 64HDD doesn't support that. It doesn't actu-
ally emulate a real 1541, it just implements the transfer protocol
that CBM drives use to communicate. You might want to try 1541emu, but
it requires a different cable and a pentium computer with a fast
parallel port.

First, the directories may have been tampered with in order to "hide"
their contents. That's nothing special, and actually, the games should
still work after issueing a LOAD"*",8,1 command. But that's probably
not the main problem.
The main problem apparently are these games' fastloaders, which most
definitely won't work with 64HDD. I guess you'll have to live with
that until 64HDDs compatibility improves further :-( .

I think I have successfully tested Maniac Mansion with 1541EMU. Zak
McKracken should also work. Can someone confirm this?

NTSC specific, game/loading routines.
I'll give it a try. Just browsed the 1541Emu page and it certainly looks
interesting. Think I'll drag my C= stuff over to a friend's place, see if we
can get this to work!
Thanks!

Yes, that might be a better option. With Errol Smith's Unzip64 or Pasi
Ojala's gunzip64 you can unpack the d64 images to the 1541, so you
don't need any additional transfer software.
