I was looking for a Composite Video to VGA adapter and came across the
Geniatech V2V (Video 2 VGA). They ship directly from China and will set
you back about $45 (including shipping). There are always a few up on
ebay and they seem to be targeting PS2/Xbox kiddies .. However, their
product isn't at all that bad for the price and is good for much more.

I've taken some pictures: Color bars output from an SX64 on and LCD and
the unit itself (the CD is there to give you perspective on size).

There is a stereo audio passthrough feature that is convenient as most A/V
cables are bundled together. At first I wasn't sure why they bothered,
but when I thought about the my PSone's A/V cable I realized how useful it
would be.

It has some basic color/tint control as well as output geometry settings
for scaling input. It seems to be able to take in multiple inputs
(composite, S-Video and mini VGA) however I haven't determined if you can
configure input priority.

I did notice ghosting (chroma to luma delay), but its not terrible.

this looks quite well.

A german shop also sells V2V boxes:

http://www.pollin.de/shop/detail.php?pg=NQ==&a=OTA4ODcyOTk=

Unfortunately a german buyer told, that one of
these is not working with his PAL C64. The V2V
seems to be not able to correctly sync onto the
C64 signal. The picture always scrolls
horizontally as Florian reported. Have a look
at:

Do you know the difference? Why does your
device work? Is your SX64 a NTSC or a PAL
device?

I got the same unit a few days ago (actually it doesn't show the
Geniatech logo on the box).
For me it doesn't work with a C64-I and a C64-DTV. The picture is always
horizontally scrolling.
Other video sources (VCR, digital cam, etc.) work fine.

According to the original order page I got a V2V pro 2381. The one that
comes with an included TV-tuner (V2V pro 2382) is reported as
C64-compatible.

Cheers,

Florian

As someone who preordered the ill-fated C=VGA adaptor, I'm extremely
interested in a thing like this. (I found it at
http://213.61.168.141/shop/default.aspx?TY=item&ST=1&IT=77&CT=21 ;
they ship anywhere in Europe.) If someone has experience - good or bad
- with the newer 2382 unit, please, share them with us: picture/audio
quality, nice non-trivial features, bugs and other important things to
know before ordering (or not ordering). Thanks!

yesterday, after having read this post, I myself dived
into the field of video format conversion and all the
different approaches users tried out.

In the end I ordered this device:
http://www.mein-einkaufsladen.de/ueberwachung/monitore/x4-tech-sol-8-vga-dvb-t-fernseher-mit-dual2.html

Ebster from Forum-64 and another user there reported
this device to work. Not only does deliver reasonable
picture quality, but it runs at 50.xxxxHz and thus, any
scrollers are played without judder. I'll see, if this
holds true.

References (look out for string "x4-tech"):

Because I also wanted to find out what's up with the
device that Florian bought, the 2381 Geniatech, I got
to another thread. There some users pointed out
differences between the devices. As Florian says, he
got a Geniatech device from Pollin.de which revealed
to be a 2381. Forum-64 users that successfully tested
(another) Geniatech device are telling to have bought
a 2382 from Tinxi.de.

Reference, Ebster reports about the juddering:

Well, I myself looked out for the the next bigger
Geniatech device, the Tinxi/Geniatech 33004. It does
support resolutions up to 1920X1200 and thus also
should support from 1600x1200 TFT. All the other
devices end up with 1440*960 (widescreen) or
1280* 1024.

A year or so back, I bought a very cheap "May Flash Multi VGA Box" from
eBay for this purpose.

It was very inexpensive, so I didn't expect much. I was pleasantly
surprised and it works fine with the C64 and Amiga (composite A520
output). The picture is a little fuzzy on the LCD due to scaling and
the colors have to be adjusted, but it handles the borders properly and
seems smooth. I hooked the C64 up to the S-Video (Y/C) input with no
problems.

I just received one of these for my tower project.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290216128382&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=019

Cost me $65 shipped from Hong Kong. Pretty Plain Jane, no adjustments
or audio but the picture seems pretty crisp in my first tests.

The XRGB-II has a lot of adjustments.

I couldn't resist buying a V2V pro 2832 from Tinxi finally.
Since I currently prepare for relocation almost all of my equipment is
packaged already.
I could get hold of a (unmodded, still with "color-bug") PAL-based
C64-DTV though, which is working fine.
So from a picture quality point of view there is not much to say yet.

BTW, I got another VGA converter, which is titled "VGA BOX" from a
friend in the meantime. That box isn't even able to display any "motion"
picture. It just draws screenshots from time to time.

Cheers,

Florian
