The following email has been going around to several people:

------------------------------------------------------------

From: Bo Zimmers [b...@zimmers.net]

Your order of "On the Edge: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore"
has shipped. Approximate shipping times are as follows:

USA and Canada: 5 to 10 days
International (Ground): 4 to 6 weeks
International (Air): 6 to 10 days

I hope you enjoy reading this book. If you like it, please write a
review on Amazon.com or other online retailers. Help spread the
Commodore story by telling anyone who owned a Commodore computer about
this book!

Variant Press
------------------------------------------------------------

This email is some sort of a scam.

First off, I am *BO ZIMMERMAN* not *BO ZIMMERS*

Secondly, I have absolutely nothing to do with the new Commodore Book,
unless you count the fact that I'm as eager to read it as many of you.

Please pass this word around.

Thanks,
Bo Zimmerman

What's funny is that if you gone by Bo Zimmers - they would be entitled to
pay you royalties.
Sounds funny but you know - they use your email.

So it looks like Variant Press owes you money. ;-P

Correction,

This may or may not be a scam. I can be a MISTAKE on who the author is.
There is a book by that name by Brian Bagnall. This book may or may not be a
scam. It might make sense to contact (NOT buy the book from) the seller and
tell them that the author's name is incorrect. The author is Brian Bagnall.

On the other hand, I suggest not buying from a seller who can't have the
right author's name. Which it does sound like a scam where the author
collects money but never ships the book because they don't have the book.
(Makes sense for not having the correct author's name)

This just gets curiouser and curiouser.

The email was sent to people through one of the email servers at
"mts.net".

The Books author, Brian Bagnall also has a mts.net email addy.

Could all these emails be official email from Brian after all? And if
so, what the heck is he using my email address as a from-address for?

Perhaps he hates me and wants me to be marked as a spammer?

Strange.

I cna only imagine he set up a mailer to all the folks who pre-ordered,
and messed it up somehow.

Did you send him an email and ask that he correct it?

Very strange, indeed. I got one of those e-mails, but I did purchase
the book so I didn't think anything about it. I certainly didn't take
the time to sift through the mail headers. Even if I had, in this day
of unauthenticated smtp it wouldn't have told me anything useful. I was
very curious about how you were associated with this book. Now I at
least know the answer to that.

I didn't actually receive the book yet. Now I wonder if I ever will.

Time will tell...

I sent e-mail to the book's author, Brian Bagnall, asking what was up
with this. He answered immediately.

Brian set up some bulk e-mail software to send out e-mail to all the
folks who purchased his book, and he simply mis-configured it. Bo's
e-mail address was accidentally entered as the from address.

So if you're one of the folks who purchased this book, rest assured that
you haven't been scammed in any way and your book is on its way.

Thanks,

Dave

I also sent an email to Brian and received a similar reply.

Which is, of course, WONDERFUL NEWS! The book *really* is shipping.

My fear, of course, was that someone unrelated to the book was trying
to get our hopes up by sending those shipping emails to folks from the
comp.sys.cbm group and attributing it to a random member.

Brian informed me of the mistake with his email sender, and that the
emails are quite genuine (aside from the fact that I was listed as the
sender, and my last name was listed as ZIMMERS!!!)

I remember all those many moons ago when I was sitting in front of the
networksolutions web site staring at the search screen. I had just
discovered that both zimmerman.net/com/org and zimmermans.net/com/org
was not available, and was trying to figure out what to do. Little did
I know the confusion it would cause by picking zimmers instead of some
unrelated name, like scratchbottom.net or something. :)

I received the book yesterday. I think I ordered it the day the
announcement was made.

Anyway, I would be more curious from where Brian's emailer picked
up Bo's address unless they run on the same system or something.
