For you hardcore DTV-watchers out there, I received my 2-pack of DTVs today.
I'm in Toronto, Canada. They were ordered on November 28 and shipped on
December 1.
Also, some of us Canadians were wondering what the extra $13 "tax" QVC
charged us was - my guess is that it's prepaid PST/GST. I say this because
I received a package of similar size and value a couple of days ago from the
US, and the post office charged me GST+PST on top of the stated price (plus
a $5 "handling fee") before delivery, and it worked out to be about the
same.
So now I have 3, as I was given one by TPUG (via Tulip) as a thank-you for
helping at World of Commodore. So that reopens hacking possibilities... ;-)
Regards,
Leif
I got mine my two pack about a week ago. My son was thrilled, and
exclaimed "alright! our first gaming console is a C64!"
So far, I've got the keyboard and power supply hooked up. Next is the
IEC, I'm going to use a mini-din a la PS2 and wire an adaptor cable.
It's easier to fit that way. Then I'll try for the joystick.
Jim
Agreed. That's the way I did mine, but be sure not to confuse the 2 : )
Just trying to find a source of the double stacked PS/2 connectors
like you find on ATX motherboards. I have a few non working
mobos that I might just rip them out of.
Scott
Doh, should've checked my mouser catalog before posting. Mouser
has them. Part nos.
806-KMDG-6SG/P-S4N (Green and Purple) $1.27USD/ea.
or
806-KMDG-6S/6S-S4N (Both are black) $1.74USD/ea.

d'OH! My first console game was "Ms. Pac Man", but my second one was "DTV".
I guess you COULD call these game consoles... though that usually implies
you can change games via cart or disk... I love the Ms. Pac Man one because
it has Xevious, one of my favorite arcade games, but the idiots designed the
thing with the fire buttons on the wrong side for playing fast-fire games.
Fire button should always be on the right for right-handers for Xevious
anyway.
I think all these console designers should put buttons on both sides of the
stick. Or they could install a rotation switch that rotates the stick 90
degrees, putting the buttons on the other side.
The DTV has two buttons, but those aren't alanagous, are they?
Since I'm not allowed to open my DTV till Christmas can anyone tell me if
both fire buttons on it are the same, or do they have different functions?
Sean.

I got to impatient to wait for mail order :-) I found a surplus store
that had PS2 mouse connectors on a bracket for older systems, and
bought on of those. It had the 4 pins for the keyboard already wired
nicely.
For the IEC, I bought a keyboard/mouse extension cable. I hacked the
female end for the DTV, and the female end with most of the cable will
be sued for the adaptor cable. Two connectors and a 6 foot cable for
$4.95!

You can imagine the fun I have, I'm left handed, and games like
paradroid use the left button on the dtv. I have to choose between
sacrificing manueverability or firepower!

All the connectors, keyboard, power, and IEC will be on the front of
the case, power in the middle. Hopefully that will keep evein me from
mixing them up!
Not sure where to put the joystick port, if there is room, on the back
might be nice, so it won't get in the way if you are not using it.

If Tulip is reading this group, as some have speculated, perhaps they could
do something about that on future DTV devices. Maybe even on the upcoming
PAL release.
Put a fire button on top of the stick, as well as on the base. Back in "the
day" a lot of third party joystick manufacturers took that approach to solve
the problem of some people being right handed and others being left handed.

OK, this is an easy problem to fix...
Get a Double Pole, Double Throw Switch and a friend (or yourself) with
some soldering expertise, and I'll tell you how to swap the buttons.

I should have thought of that . . . However, I'm going to hack in a
parallel joystick port, so that I can use my other joystick. I don't
know how much more stuff put into it the case can stand! (insert
Scottish engineer type accent here) :-)
I could mount it in top, between the two buttons, I suppose . . .
