Hi,

the 1350 mouse is more or less a reversed trackball emulating a
joystick. So far, so good. But what is the difference between the 1351
and 1351a mice? What dies the "a" stand for in terms of features or
functionality?

Where did you find this a?

in the GEOS input device selector. It has three items "JOYSTICK", "COMM
1351" and "COMM 1531a".

I never saw a 1351a in the wild, only a 1351. So I wonder what the "a"
version is.

I don't recall seeing this in Geos. Might it be simply a different driver
that somehow found its way on your Geos disk?

though I can't say for sure, I don't think so, because every GEOS disk
I ever came across (including original disks!) has these three entries.
I never bought an original disk directly in a store, only second hand.
So I can't say what the previous owner did to them. But did all
previous owners add/replace a mouse driver? IMHO unlikely.

1351a is the accelerated mouse driver, 1351 is the standard one.

Mystery solved ;-) I don't recall it on my disks but I used only the older
Geos versions and some good years ago now..

which means both drivers should work with a 1351? Well, in fact the
1351a does not seem to work while the 1351 does. Strange...

The 1351 has two modes of operation, joystick and proportional.

I don't know if the drivers use two different modes, but maybe one mode
isn't working. Could be a dud mouse, a dud computer or a dud driver ;-)

Since I don't use Geos or have a mouse someone else here might be able
confirm that the 1351a driver works.

I take it the computer has a working SID and the paddles work, and the
joystick port works ok?

And it's not the mouse shaped 1350 joystick is it?

I know, depending on whether the right button is pressed on mouse power-up.

the hardware is ok. Everything works. Just the 1351a driver does not.
Paddles do, joysticks do, and the 1351 driver does too. I just gave it
another try and now it works. Strange. Maybe a loose contact? What
makes me wonder is: Using COMM 1351 behaves exactly the same as does
COMM 1351(a). No playing around with the acceleration sliders in the
Preferences have any influence on mouse speed. It's just fixed and
doesn't change.

see above.

it's an original packaged 1351 mouse and the bottom label also says so:
"MODEL: 1351"

Would be interesting to do a comparison using a hex editor.

Ok then.

When I open the files in a hex editor there is some text in the 1351a
driver which states:

"New, accellerated mouse driver covers more area when moved quickly."

The 1351 driver states:

"Input driver for the Commodore 1351 proportional mouse."

So when you move it quickly, using the 1351a driver, does the mouse
pointer cover more area?

yes, it does, but not sooooo much noticable. Also, the acceleration
settings in Preferences don't seem to have any effect. Anyway, the
mouse works. That's what counts. :-)
