2nd Reality for C64 ??.. PLEASE PLEASE .. where can I get it ?.. what
is the zip-filename it is in ?? What party was it shown ??
Jou.
Right, if you don't set the sound option to SID (cursor right three times
then hit enter on the select menu) it'll give an error saying that the
sound card couldn't initialise and the demo returns you to DOS in the
correct directory. Just enter SECOND to re-run it.
If you select the manual start, get to the DOS prompt type CD DEMOS then
CD 2NDREAL and finally the command SECOND to start it or SECOND 2, SECOND 3
and SECOND 4 to start from an entry point.

Yes, it was done by Smash Designs (with KB/TOM on audio) and is available
to download at ftp://ftp.scs-trc.net in the directory pub/c64/party/Party97
which is the place it was released (and which compo it won). It comes as
one PKZipped file containing two sides of disk zipcoded...
Other things to try include CDing into other directories and running
the intro and Mekka advert or, in the 2NDREAL directory, typing
EDIT INFO1SDS.TXT
I liked this demo a lot, the emulation of the AmiBIOS was *very* well
done... =-) One word of warning, Odie/Cosine has had problems with the
disksystem on a 1541-II, it's not a common fault, mine's okay, but *some*
drives may give problems...

Hi!
It won the C64 democompo some days ago at The Party 1997, denmark - and it
rocked!!!
I haven't got it yet, but I guess it uses the C64 and 1541 to the
absolute maximum, eg. the coder of the demo AEG/Smash Designs told me
that he uses "illegal" opcodes!
So you'll probably need a very good emulator, or simply run it on a
standard C64 with a standard 1541 drive without catridges etc....

You can either:
* do a little MS-DOS
or
press 1 instead of 2 at the first menu it gives, and set soundcard to SID.

not to mention that it's just a rip-off of a helluva old demo, has no
innovation and no real design either and just won the compo because of
hundreds of pc guys who know shit about the c64, it's abilities and the
common c64-and-the-bigscreen-problem...
you better have a look at void by coma and resource or graham's demo,
which were so sadly beaten by this done-for-a-pc-audience bullshit...

S'alright, but I preferred Oneder by Oxyron... I've reviewed both for
Commodore Zone and Oneder scored slightly higher.

Yeah, I bloody *noticed!* (I've had to unjam my drive a couple of times
here!)
Still, it's the first Smash demo in a while that pretty much works on my
C128D... I wouldn't have said "to the absolute maximum" though, there are
a few waits while the disksystem catches up with onscreen events...

CCS64 is capable, I believe. Some real 1541-II drives will bug out on
AEG's disksystem and my 1541 has headjammed more than once on it...

Amen, brother!
A neat touch was that Grahams demo was applauded loudly at the preliminary
credits screen - *before* it even was shown. :) The fact that it, like his last
offering, is a single-loader just makes it even more impressive.
As for "2nd Reality" I have to agree with Seven; it won because a load of PC
guys were impressed by seing something they already knew. If innovation had
played any part "2nd Reality" would never have risen above the number 3 spot.

Don't trust everything he says.. he is a TALKMASTER sometimes.
I may be wrong, but as I know him a little I think this could be a cheap
excuse that they didn't get it fixed well.
Illegal opcodes are no good anyway.

Me too please!
I tried download the second reality demo from the ftp site
mentioned earlier but I got a bunch of .z64 files. What
the heck is a .z64 file and what do I do with it?

Use ZipCode to restore the files to a 1541 disk. ZipCode should be
available from several FTP sites. I D/L ed Alternate Reality, the first
part of it ran flawlessly on my NTSC flat 128, but it hung up when it
attempted to load after the tie fighter thingies flew overhead.
The Oxyron demo (Oneder) runs flawlessly on my 128! Is it just me, or
does Oxyron rule! This demo is (IMHO) as good or better than Dawnfall, and
better than what I saw of AR. Get it now- you'll love the ending!

It was shown at The Party 7. Go to http://www.pulse.no/~mepk/cfs.html then
enter '2nd reality' (or just '2nd' if you are lazy ;) and download the
file.

.z64 files is the c64 zip format, ...
i must admit, i have no idea if there is a c64-zip-depacker available for
sunOS, but there is one for c64...
you should be able to find it in the /tools/packer section at ftp.scs-
trc.net/pub/c64

this demos and others are available at ftp://ftp.scs-trc.net/pub/c64
but nopes, they're not NTSC, sorry...
anyway, there's some other NTSC stuff on the mentioned ftp site, so you
may want to check that site anyway...
