What's everyone's favorite Commodore 64 game soundtrack? My vote
would most definitely have to be for 'Forbidden Forest" by COSMI ...

Nah, don't think so!

Being a cracker, Martin Galways loadingtunes from f.ex. Rambo and Great Escape
makes tears fall over here! Anything signed Tim Follin also kicks major butt!
Also some tunes by Rob Hubbard will never leave me; The tune Dynamic Duo used to
use in a few intros and the steel guitar one we used in our Linking leroy-leroy
demopart in Legoland I rules a lot!

I liked the soundtrack in another Cosmi release, Super Huey. I don't
know if Paul Norman wrote that one, but it's not bad!

are playing the game, because of the sfx. M.A. is still a great game
though, much better than Crazy Comets.

: M.Galway: Short Circuit, Wizball, Comic Bakery, Platoon (is this Galway?)
The music from Platoon was not made by Galway, I think it was Jonathan Dunn.
Also the music from Comic Bakery was originally used in Top Gun, and then
reused in Comic Bakery.

: Hüelsbeck: Denaris, X-Out, Spherical, Rock'n Roll, Badcat
: (*ALL* of them *MUCH* better than the 16 bit versions)
Did Huelsbeck make the music in X-Out? I thought it was F.A.M.E

I also have an addition. What about Slimey's Mine? I know it has no music,
but the sound-effects are great :-)

Actually I don't know what's the best, but here are some really worth
listening:

Enigma Force , Shadowfire, Commando , Mission AD

Robb (his spelling, from when he and Rob Jackson used to appear on Compunet's
PartyLine service and it would only allow one Rob at a time!) only did
two soundtracks for Thalamus, Sanxion (loading and titles tune) and Delta
(loading mix-e-music, titles, ingame, completion, fx and unused jingles)
so it must be one of those!

I've just thought of another cool one, Outrun Europa intro by J.T.

International Karate had perfect sound! Just when things were getting tougher,
the music changed into a more thrilling kind of music.
Also the samples were really cool, especially the sound the karate suits
made when doing a kick; not all this shouting and screaming, but just
a nice sound.

(Hope anyone remembers it)

The game itself was great, altough in the end I couldn't loose anymore ;)

The best soundtrack for the C64 EVER was a program called
'DRIVE MUSIC', that actually made the 1541 disk drive SING !!! I
ran it on my FSD-2, not knowing what it was about and it is quite
funny !! I shall post it here later (1.5K !)...

Hi everyone,

I thought that one was really neat too. I tried running it once (ONCE) on
my 1571. It was *loud*. I have heard from several sources though that it
is very hard on the disk drive and should not be run... Just my $0.02. :)

Drive Music was a great program. Even now, armed with disassembly, I
still am at a loss to how he managed to throw it together. The only
problem I found was that it doesn't work well on drives that have
good sound insulation, for obvious reasons :-)

Oh Yes, how could I forget?! The music by Kenneth Williams to the
Ultima III and IV games absolutely made it for me. The atmosphere they
generated was superb. When Ultima V came out and there was no music for the
64 I was heart broken... it was almost enough to make me want to buy a
C-128 : just to hear the music!! Sigh....................................

I would go down into Dungeons just to hear those spooky 'melodies', and
fight scenes were just brilliant!

None of the recent, 'better', Ultimas on the PC have spent as much time on
the music as their older Commodore counterparts, and I can't help but
feel that something is missing... so much for progress.

The music isn't as good in V as in III and IV. It's also pretty obnoxious
having the music interrupted by ticking clocks, waterfalls, etc. :)

Have you ever seen Ultima VI on the 64? It is really bad. No music or
sound effects even! The keyboard reading routines are awful, and the
characters are multicolor, which makes everything look like thoroughly
undistinguishable blobs of color :). Basically they ported it straight
from the PC, with results like you might expect :).

>None of the recent, 'better', Ultimas on the PC have spent as much time on
>the music as their older Commodore counterparts, and I can't help but
>feel that something is missing... so much for progress.

Yes, the C64 music is definitely the best out of the various platforms
Ultima is on.

Now, I wanted to comment on the earlier comment that the music was "simple".
There are different ways of being simple, or, alternatively, there are
different ways of being complex. I could write a piece of music for 100
French horns, all with different parts. It would certainly be complicated,
but only in a physical sense. I could also write a piece for solo violin
which modulates keys every fifth note, has polyphonic parts, and sounds
so simple that you don't even notice -- that's a little more complicated.

In the musical performance world there is a term: flash trash. It denotes
music which sounds flashy and technically impressive but doesn't have much
else going for it. They tend to be fun to play and fun to listen to, but
are somehow very unsatisfying at an intellectual or spiritual level. You
can of course draw analogies to film, television, etc.

Most modern tunes for games and demos fall into the category of flash trash.
They sound pretty cool, but they are basically kindergarten composition.
The music generally revolves around a single theme and one or maybe two
chords, and very simple and repetitious rhythms. Really sophisticated
compositions will occasionally transpose the theme to a new key -- wow!!! ;-)

I do not, however, find the Ultima III music to be simple. In the main
song you have the theme with the 'oom-pah' accompanient. Then double-time
the accompanient. Tripets on the main theme. Then a very nice harmony
is added. Then there's a tiny little theme development, and the really nice
five-note three-part harmony sequencing which brings you back to the main
theme, in a different instrument. Not terribly complex, but several steps
above the average computer composition ;).

More importantly, each composition in III has with it an ambience which
is almost profound, and complements the game perfectly. It is the most well-
matched music in a game that I can think of. I haven't listened to it in
years but it is deeply etched into my brain. The sound effects, too, are
perfect.

By the way, you do know that you can hear the various compositions from
the Journey Onwards screen, right? Press space, and return to the view.
Each time you return to the view you will get a different piece, including
the Exodus' Castle theme with all its sevenths and such. This doesn't
work in Ultima IV -- you just have to wait for all the songs.

Ultima 4
Ultima 3

Yie-Ar Kung Fu (Leave the title screen on for 5 minutes)
SKate or Die (title screen)

As I recall, you had to have obtained the "bag of powder" item. When you
threw the bag, it would explode into a ball of powder. Turns out the dust
is a sleeping powder. If you stood at just the right spot, you threw the
bag of powder toward the dragon... the dragon then went through a little
animation of falling asleep. You could then walk past safely.

Took me a while to figure how that worked. I don't think I ever used the
sleeping powder anywhere else in that whole game, but I could be wrong. I
remember the dragon part clearly as it seemed to take me forever to
figure it out.

I seem to remember an article in Run or Computes Gazette about the
mission impossible speech. They talked about the differences between
digitized and synthesized speech. The former being a recording of
actual speech and the later being contructed in one form or another
from scratch.

Mission impossible was of the later type. The speech was synthesized.

you can move upward/downwards, there are cactuses in between, and someone a
waggon drives by. It has some kind of speach in it, but I haven't been able
to figure out what they say, does anyone know?

Oh yes, one more that I forgot...

The tape loader music from Imagine, the "heavy version". I have it on my
copies of 'Yie Ar Kung Fu II' and 'Slap Fight'. It starts out like the old
one (that are on most of the game), but goes on to a more heavy version...

Actually, it has happened that I just loaded the game to hear that tune,
and then shut the computer off again :-)

Unfortunately, no. I only have I, Ball II on tape (original game). I don't

Better ask Pontus about that... He's a professional :-)

I don't know, but it sounds like the prequel to Street Fighter. Can't these
game companies stop taking ideas from old commodore games? =)

I thought that, and it's completely possible (since I have 2 PCs side by side),

Joining in late on this thread, has anyone mentioned the soundtrack from
Alternate Reality The Dungeon? Great game (the best) and great soundtrack (the
best soundtrack for the C64 IMHO). Had words to many of the songs, of course
this appeared as text on screen, but you couldn't help but sing along now and
then. =) By the way I am looking to buy a good copy of this game if anyone has
but does not want it.

I have a collection of ten games (including both Yie Ar Kung Fu and Hyper

one did it first... I dunno.

I think that all used the same music except for Yie Ar Kung Fu II, who used
the 'heavy' version.

I just checked out In Medias Res (http://www.kuai.se/~zike) and it turns out
that Martin Galway himself refers to this tune as "the Hyper Sports loader".
That firmed my belief that Hyper Sports was the first game with this tune
somewhat. :-)

P.S: Is it just me, or did the loader for Wizball sound slighly different
from the normal (Hyper Sports) Ocean loader?

My friend had the disk version of Magnificent Seven (a great game collection).

Well, I thought that it sounded different. Then I found Zyron's Galway
collection and, yes, there were three versions of the Hyper Sports loader.
The original, the heavy version, and the Slap Fight version. When I heard
the term "heavy", I thought the Slap Fight loader was meant.

Anyway. James Galway is one of the world's most renowned flutists, having
won several awards. The strange thing is that on the INC pages, it says
that he's also Martin Galway's uncle. Can someone *please* verify this?

I haven't played any of the two mentioned, I only know it's on Yie Ar Kung Fu

Well, generally speaking you *have* heard the heavy version! It's the same
tune as the Hypersports loader except that after playing the intro it gets
to that bit with the downwards slide and slows down to about half tempo!
When it gets to the end it wraps and speeds back up!

I know Binary Zone PD are working on a Martin Galway collection and all
three tunes are to be included! It's nearly done (Kenz/BZ is also in
Cosine!) so I'll put it up to an FTP site as soon as I get it!

I quite liked the Choroid (Johnathon Dunn) Ocean loader music, the first
