Getting the files from the C128 to the PC is not a problem (null modem),
but I need to make sure the CBM files are in the lowest denominator
I can get...
Anyone recommend a (hopefully share or PD) program (or more than 1)
which I can FTP to make this process less painful?

For the geoWrite files, assuming all you want is the text, you can use W.C.
Coleman's "Wrong is Write." With this, you can convert geoWrite files to
either PETSCII or true ASCII. I think the latest version is 6.2; if it isn't
on any ftp sites now, I can put it on tybalt.
Also, I believe that Jim Collette wrote a geoPaint->PCX converter. To my
knowledge, no geoPaint->GIF converter currently exists, although some have
thought about creating one.
The use of these two programs assumes that you want to use the files on your
PC. Although you could probably convert the paint file back without loss of
information, you will lose the geoWrite formatting information when you
convert it to plain ASCII.
If your goal is rather to just transfer the files, and they will end up being
used by another system, you will rather want the program "Connvert2.5" by
W.C.Coleman; this is available, I believe, both at milton and at tybalt.
Convert will convert your GEOS files to C64/128 native files (PRG or SEQ),
which can then be transferred as binary files. The same program will convert
these files back to their original GEOS form. Note, however, that GEOS files
converted to native C= format are not useful in and of themselves.

For the record, Wrong is Write was written by Joe Buckley, aka Red
Storm.

Hmm, I thought Wrong is Write was a Joe Buckley program. Am I wrong again?

Or you could use MacAttack II to convert geoPaint files to .MAC files, then use
mac2gif on the PC end to turn it into a GIF. That adds an extra step, but keep
it in mind if having GIFs turns out to be more convenient than PCXs for some
reason.

No, you're right, I speezed when I posted that it was W. Coleman's.
