I was at friends' place tonight looking at their honeymoon photos from
Japan. They had photos of a "gateway" standing in the middle of the water -
in a bay I think. A remark was made about a C64 game that had the same scene
- possibly a martial arts game, and possibly "part 3"?!?

I never owned a C64 so I have no idea. And it wasn't IK+ (although it did
remind me of the "gateway" just behind the fighters).

Ring any bells for anyone?
TIA

Regards,

"The Way of the Exploding Fist", perhaps? The gateway is not in the
middle of the water, though.

Another possibility would be The Last Ninja Part 3, though Fist was the
first thing I thought of too.

Here's a screenshot of the Apple II cover for Last Ninja Part 3 - shows
a gate in water, which the C64 box did not:

They are called Torii: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torii

If they mentioned "part 3" it was most likely The Last Ninja 3.
There is also one of these in the opening screen of the game
called simply Ninja:

Nice - thanks for that Ian, Lars!!!

I couldn't find any screenshots on the "walkthough" site for Last Ninja 1,2
or 3 that featured any Torii in the water, so I'm suspecting that the game
in question was actually "Ninja". I also vaguely recall him mentioning the
"opening screen" so that's probably it.

And the Torii in question is indeed the very 1st example given on the
wikipedia page - The famous "floating" torii at Itsukushima Shrine, a
Ryoubu-style torii.

Looking into the long plays. I am more wondering if they were talking
about multiple games.
I just watch the long play for Last Ninja 3 and it is in the desert. I
looked for some photos
and as you can see IK fits the bill quite nicely. I also found a Last
Ninja box cover with the Torii.
I would think they stated which is the best game and what karate games
do they remember for the 64.
If this was the conversation, Last Ninja 3 would of been the best as
well as IK+ on my list. One
I used to play as well was yie-ar kung fu but I do not remember any
Toriis located in the game.

That was my initial guess, as I owned an Amiga myself (and played IK+ quite
a bit). But he was adamant that it wasn't the game in question.
