Hi all:

I have a friend who says that when he tries to run the first program on a
disk, he gets a "Syntax Error In Line 0" error. He gets aroung this by
typing, "RUN 10" and things are fine. Can anyone offer an explaination
for this?

I told him to drop it by tomorrow and I'd try it out on my system (C=64).
He says it happens on all of his disks.

Watch his fingers when he tries to load the first program on the disk.
What command is he using? If he keys in something in the command line
that the Basic interpreter sees as "run 0" then he will definitely get
this syntax error.

First of all unplug all additional hardware and activate the original
CBM-Kernal.

After loading the program he should first take a look at what he loaded
(try the LIST-command). If the directory is still listed there might be
something wrong with the load command or with the start address of the
program. The header of the directory starts with "0" what would be
interpreted as line 0. Try to load a directory and run it - you'll get a
syntax error in 0. Load the program with ",8" instead of ",8,1".

If the error still occurs his C64 probably has got an hardware failure.
Touch the RAMs with your fingers to check if one of them gets
significant hotter than the other ones during operation. This would be
the candidate for replacing. If there's no difference between the RAMs
try replacing the PLA next if you've got some replacement chips
available. If this shows no effect try to replace one VIA 6526 by the
other one.

I never had damaged ROMs or processors while repairing C64's so this
should be the last Checks to be done if the failure still occurs.

Hmm?? I think that might suggest that the directory listing is still
partially in memory when he runs? But how is that possible..

He isn't trying to 'RUN' the directory listing is he???
