Does anyone know if the '80s/'90s UK software company Alternative Software
are still in business or not? They used to be based in Pontefract, West
Yorkshire (WF8 2LN).

There's a site here http://www.alternativesoftware.com/ but there does not
seem to be any contact email address etc, where I can get in touch and I'm
not 100% sure if they are the same people.

Si.

The site does have an email address on it
custome...@alternativesoftware.com and it is still in Pontefract AFAIK
however I have tried to contact them on a few occasions with no response (i
asked for permission to place a disk image of a game I made for them in the
80s onto my website, they didn't respond, so I put it on anyway!).
I also know other people who made games for them and never received their
full royalties - they have had a very difficult time trying to contact them,
even turning up on their doorstep!

Same here Neil. I'm making enquiries on behalf of my cousin who wrote a
game for them and (allegedly!) got screwed over too.

Thanks for the info.

Alternative is one of the few software houses to survive to this day and it
is a shame that they have such a bad reputation for paying royalties.
Personally I took a one-off payment from them instead of royalties. What
game did your cousin make? I have found out in the last few years that
Alternative sold most of their back catalogue to a Polish company in the
mid-90s and they were re-released on cartridges (including my game). Maybe
your cousin is due even more royalties, but I doubt he will ever see them!
You can see what games were re-released on my website

Hey Neil, thanks for the info. The game was Reckless Rufus (C64 version of
course!) and does appear to have been re-released going by your page. What
are the chances of tracking down a copy of said cartridges?

I actually had an email off your cousin (Mike I presume?) about this
yesterday. Sadly the chances of getting a cart are very slim as Atrax
had pretty much run out of C64 supplies by the time I got my set made.

As Reckless Rufus is also on Zestaw #4, then should it appear on eBay,
then I expect to see a fight between Mike and Neil to win it ;)

(as Lethal is ALSO on that cart!)

Mike here!

Just sent you a reply Mayhem, thanks for your email. I'm only three doors
down from Simon and had to check out this place once I heard the news!
Bloody Alternative - cheeky buggers! I would very much like to take a look
at Zestow 4 of course, but I'm not a crazy collector so Neil is safe from me
providing he would let me have a quick look at the cart before he stores it
away for all eternity (Hi Neil!). I've put the word out on my site so if I
do find anything I'll contact both of you guys. In the meantime please feel
free to email me anytime.

Mike.

I think its everyone's moral obligation to pass on any ultra-rare carts to
mayhem. His collection is out of this world, and it would be great for at
least one person on the planet to have most, if not all, of them.

Oh shucks, now you're embarrassing me here ;) :p

The flip side is I do try to archive and dump as many as I own so
people can play them on emulators. There's a few carts out there I know
exist but I don't own, but I know people who have them, hence the
reason why I know they exist heh...

I've tried everywhere to get a Zestaw 4, even asking in Polish on Polish
forums with no luck. A few Zestaws came up on ebay some time ago but not
number 4.

I've got a contact actually located in Poland who will do some detective
work for me Neil. Again if I hear anything I'll let you know.

Mike.

Well there's two addresses on the scans I sent, so hopefully that can
be a start :)
