There is a related project which aims to bring some of the Java virtual
machine to the 6502 world (to this point only for the Apple II, though):

This sounds a bit senseless. Think about the size of java programs, and
after that, compare these large amounts of bytes with a 60KB CP/M TPA...

Addendum: CP/M came in my mind during writing these lines, sorry. But
it's similar with CBM machines, even if you're thinking about bank
switching/memory windows etc.

How about before creating another "transcompilier" for a language which is widely known. Maybe CC65 folks can start making their "C" compiler into ANSI compatible first, and then your "Transcompiler" will be too -- ie: support Floating Point as everyone else does(compiliers and interpreters). It's almost as obnoxious as the Propeller design team when they insisted they don't need to support interrupts in their new processor (this was about 5yrs ago)

Why wouldn't they work on GCC Java frontend (or is it backend? No, must be frontend..) instead: http://gcc.gnu.org/java/? There's already a lot of work put into converting java to native code..

obnoxious.... lol. it could be the fact that "they" - those who are also
using the compiler for actual real life projects - have other requirements
than floats.

other than that - forget all these anything2c translators when it comes to
8bit targets. they usually bloat the code beyond useability and you'll end
up with a slowish piece of memory hog =P
